Finally got to drop the hammer on a deer with my slufoot conversion this morning. 50 yd shot with 58 grs of N120 with a 200 gr sst. Not to impressed with the sst. Even though it was pretty much a bang flop. Hit him a little high but real close behind the shoulder. No pass thru.Upon field dressing him I found out the bullet hit the opposite side broke a rib or 2 but didn't penetrate the off side hide. From there it appeared the bullet bounced around because it pierced the diaphragm and put a hole in the liver. And I know for a fact at the angle of the shot there was no way I got into the liver. Any way it did the job but I would prefer a pass through any day. I got a doe tag left. Gonna see if I can't do some more hair testing before I give up on the sst. I haven't tried the 195gr barnes in this h&r conversion yet. So I don't know if it will shoot them or not.

Pretty cool! Congrats on a fine deer! As far as the SST goes I understand the pass threw part but for me if it hits the ground and fills my tag I'm happy. As of right now the SST has been the most accurate out of my rifle so if I do my part hit the deer right then I should be fine. I'm not suggesting that you can't use the Barnes they are a great bullet lots of people like them. What I'm getting at is like Chevy or Ford some petite like Chevy and some like Ford. At least Ford circled the problem! Lol jk.
Congrats on a great animal and on your slufoot conversing kill! Awesome!

Nicely done, congratulations.
The 200 SST may or may not exit but its got the job done on every deer I have shot with it.

I have shot both the 195 Barnes and the 200 SSTs. I think they are both fine bullets. Hard to argue with dead right there.

Nice job!
SST will get the job done. But I really don't think there's much debate that the 195BX is a superior deer bullet. Of course, I would say these days there's not much debate that Ford is better than Chevy too.

Congrats on the Buck! As stated before..I've had pass thru issues with SST's as well, but never with Barnes 195's.

Congrats on the nice buck, and seriously no disrespect meant or implied but to quote a old saying pertaining to bullet performance: "At what point after the deer dies rapidly did the bullet fail" or words to that effect. If you are looking for a bomb proof ML bullet in .40 cal I'm reasonably sure you have heard of the Barnes ML bullet. They simply don't come any more "BOMB PROOF" than the all copper, .40 caliber 190 grain Barnes expander ML bullet, I don't think you can shoot a all copper Barnes ML bullet fast enough for it to fail. Their only short coming is they tend to be less accurate then the SST, my .45cal Knight Extreme shoots SST's into itsy-bitsy groups with astonishing regularity, but it's average with the Barnes ML bullet is 1.25"-1.5 groups, still quite good minuet of deer groups.

Nice job on the buck! I was shooting yesterday and decided to try the FTX (almost identical to the SST with perhaps more jacket thickness) they shot so well that I decided to stop right there and use them for this season. Haven't found the secret to the Barnes bullets yet.

Congratulations on the deer! 58 grains of N120... that should get your 200 SST up to around 2750 fps? Given your 50 yard shot, that means the impact velocity would have been in the neighborhood of 2550 fps.
I've killed 3 deer out of my .458 RemPac using the 200 SST. I start mine out at about 2845 fps. Two deer from last year were at 200 yards, so impact velocity of around 2100 fps. Both of those were textbook broadside shots resulting in pass-throughs. I just shot the third one this morning at about 20 yards, so impact velocity would have been about 2780 fps. This shot was from the ground, and again was a classic boiler room double lung shot resulting in an extremely fast kill. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the 200 SST blew completely through the doe, despite the closeness of the shot. I've found the 200 SST to be more accurate than the 195 Barnes, but I was worried about the 200 SST's ability to perform at high impact speeds. After seeing this morning's results, I won't hesitate to shoot the 200 SST as my only saboted hunting bullet (at least on deer).
Don't give up on the 200 SST. Keep it off bone, and my guess is you'll be fine.

My guns must be oddballs. Both of mine,Sav/Pac and Rem/Pac shoot the Barnes a little better than the SST. The Sav/Pac a little less than MOA@100 and the Rem/Pac a little over MOA@100. Both with a light knurl. The Sav/Pac around 2400 fps and the Rem/Pac around 2675 fps@the muzzle. All shoots have been pass through. First deer I killed with the 45 was a 200 SST and he was dead right there. I still like the performance of the Barnes, always two holes for tracking, although so far no tracking has been need all were DRT or within 50 yards of shot.
