Humor me. I see these are available. Do they work? Are the a viable alternative for our purposes? If no why not?

Yes they do work but alignment can be questionable. A proper installation of a muzzle brake needs to be installed with the use of an accurate lathe where the bore of the brake is concentric to the bore of the barrel to >.001. I and most who install muzzle brakes allow .010 clearance all around and that is not very much space.
I suppose if one was very careful and had a bit of luck you could install one of the clamp-on brakes but you would still need to verify the concentricy and clearance.
Certainly they would work if you were able lathe bore the clearance after clamping it on.
Muzzle brakes are not hard to install but they call for precision if they are to work well.

I think the clamp ons generally have for clearance therefor less effectiveness IMO. I would also worry about service life of one that is on and off every shot. One installed like an HK silencer would be the ticket for me.

A couple of the makers sites I looked at are claiming a 60% minimum reduction in recoil and improved accuracy. Do you guys feel the threaded version with closer tolerances provides more reduction that that?

I think 50% is realitic and added bonus for me is bench shooting theres no Barrel jump recoil is straight back due to muzzle weight.
