Ordered a 50 pacnor today. Double DD barrel 50 [.510] 26"barrel 20 twist 6 grove Match Grade SS/ bead blasted Standard 11 degree crown #7 straight taper .800@ 26"
Casey did check the 505 gibbs but was so tight he couldn't get the mmp and 300 gr hornady out, and the .510 was very tight, with a great seal he said. Also the 50BMG with the 8 grove is doable, however it would have to be turned down to a .800 which would cost another $100. I'll be the goat ;D Tomorrow [wens] I'm going in for a total knee replacement so I'll talk to guys in a few weeks. Jeff~

Sounds like the "crew" needs a medical staff today.
That is great news about you getting a .50 Pac-nor going. I will be awaiting the reports. I really think I will go this way before a .45. I have no great reason...I just like the big hole and don't mind keeping my shoulder loose.
Any reason for the choice of 6 groove 1:20 twist? Something keeps tugging on me for the faster twist 8 groove 1:14 twist. I keep comparing a .458 Win Mag to a .50 Pac.nor shooting big .458 bullets fast. Am I missing anything or is either likely to be just fine?
This is almost unchartered territory. Good luck getting your rig going and follow dr's orders. Best wishes

I was surprised to hear that Casey could not load the Gibbs, my 505 barrel loads fine! Mine is also a 1:20 twist which was a non standard from Krieger and it is a 6 groove too. Assuming that you will always use a standard sabot the 1:20 twist will be fine. Since I make my own I regretted not going 1:16....

Edge,
Could you shed your opinion on twist and applications that come into play? If sabot shredding is not an issue, I can not envision a reason why a faster twist wouldn't be better and more encompassing of all types of saboted and sabotless shooting.
What say you?

In my 505 1:20 twist and using custom sabots I shoot a 150 grain 8mm bullet. I also shot 250 SW's in a short MMP sabot.
I would not hesitate to go faster, but I don't see a huge need to unless there was a new sabot on the market that could shoot undersized bullets. It really comes down to picking your bullet because that will determine the twist needed. If you want a heavier bullet, my 1:14 will stabilize a .338 250 grain Accubond but I don't see many folks going in that direction.

What is the reasoning for a .458 Win Mag for having a 1:14 twist? Big, long 500 gr bullets I suspect.

:)goodluck jeff and congrats on your new .50 barrel.
:)wilms i think for any standard let say bullet that most of us will shoot the 20 is plenty.i also feel that any of the 3 twist's will work great.

:)Jeff, I'll pray that all goes well and suspect it will. I've had a # of friends go thru this and none had any "lasting" problems.
