Well Jeff, if my friend shows we will see what he can do, I plan to kick his tale myself but it will not be with an 8 lb Willie youth special out of a lead sled. I plan to bring something a little more shoulder friendly off of bags. Didn't know if you guys noticed but the little pea shooter kicks like a mule and screams like a panther. I know bestill and his brother got tired of the noise but they didn't complain too much.
I know whoever competes next year will have to earn their way into the top five the hard way but it will be a blast trying

I know whoever competes next year will have to earn their way into the top five the hard way but it will be a blast trying I noticed that 8lb Will barking and kicking that lead sled around. Bad day to be a target though, shot very well as I recall. I know that us guys with brakes were making more noise, sorry. I look forward in seeing what everyone brings with them next year.
The most important things that everyone should bring is a level head, a good attitude and an open mind to learn. The amount of knowledge there about smokeless muzzleloading and shooting in general was immense. I personally learned a lot, wish I could have been there early on Sunday as well but got really sick late Saturday night and have missed two days of work out sick since. I felt pretty ruff on the drive up Friday night. You could not ask for a better bunch of people to be around. Hats off to Jeff Hankins, his girlfriend, very attractive by the way, and all who were able to go up early on Friday to help organize the shoot! I wish that I could have got the time off to be up there on Friday, hopefully next year. Kyle

Jeff. Great job. I knew I'd be missing a good time. Do you know what speed you are getting with your .416 shooting 100 gr h4350? I think you answered this but did the .416 pass every test you think it should pass to be a good-shooting gun using your ignition system?

Cowhunter. The ignition system worked flawlessly with a 100% seal, 100% powder burn and accuracy was ok with the cutting edge 340 bullet. I shot it less than 10 times total and was mainly checking for ignition, hang fires, recoil and shoot ability. I shot a smooth sized MH that tumbled and smacked the target side ways so those bullets are probably out of the question.. Mark Bruckelmeyer gave me 5 CEB 340's to try. Shot three of them with 2 almost touching and one flyer. Velocity, I have know idea yet because we never chronoed the shots. I will check it for speed when I get time to shoot it some more,,but first I have over 12 hours of video to edit.... I will say the loading of the. 416 is harder that loading the. 45's. once I get a bullet that I like I will work on the proper sizing of it.. Jeff.

Waiting to see how your plugs vent hole holds up after 100 shots or so with heavy bullets and slow powder?

It looks like it was an incredible time. I would have loved to have been there, but you guys are way out of my league as far as shooting goes. I hate orange spots , they make me shake too, I need a brown target to calm me down edge.

I wanted to get a video with the one person standing on the trailer using a 4 or 5lb engineer hammer to drive that first CEB bullet down Jeff's 416s barrel. I would like to see other SML builders attend to show off (and be showed up). Tom Post's guns are good, just a different approach. The aftermarket barreled 10MLs and 700MLs are a quick and economical way using off the shelf parts that guys can do in their own garage. And if you do it right you can easily end up with .5 MOA hunting rifle. I think Jeff's ignition system is kinda a offshoot/approach of Henry Ball's module that was used in the 10ML-I. Bad Bull, Ultimate or any of those guys using the Richard Franklin style can't match ease of use with no chance of flame cutting. If Jeff adds the tungsten bushing he will add life to his plug and can easily work on refining vent size even more. Who knows, maybe we will see a Savage target action next year with a Hankins style ignition system. With a stiffer action then the 700 CF it might even get more interesting. That was one thing that stuck in my mind on the drive back, if Jeff used the stiffer 40X solid floor action to be the foundation for that heavy barrel, how much more accuracy could be rung out?

Alabama, I love the Grey and black spider Web rifle. Luke just finished mine and is shipping hopefully today. I plan on running that same stock. I also plan on having twisted spiral flute my bolt, skeletonize the handle and install a small tactical knob. Possibly In the future I will have him flute my barrel as well.
I cannot wait to get her finished! This is my first build and I am completely addicted already! I may even join in on the festivities next year at the challenge.

Bowhunter1961, that rifle belongs to SML (allen). It has a very nice feel and balance.

At the end of Mark's 416 shot I was starting to say that the shockwave bout knocked me down...I was standing to the right of Alabama on the pressure side the brake....Them guns are LOOOUUUDDDDD......

Good video Alabama, and I hear you were a funny guy to be around. Is it true that Jeff shot. 125 grains of H4350? That had to be about 100k pressure -- myers129 do the calculations.

That was Kyle that drove that first bullet down the barrel for me.. With the herniated disk I have in my back I was lucky to push those loose fitting BE's down my 45 barrel, I wanted no part of the hammer swinging but we got it in there and it fired as expected.. If I add a tungsten bushing I would probably go with a .029 or .030 hole. This would help with the small granular powders from passing through it ever so often. Marks 416 was built on a Savage target action. I built it for him about two weeks before the shoot. It uses my plug and priming system and a custom brake I make in my shop. I prefer a radial drilled style of brake but if you're going to shoot prone regularly the fish gill/military style is the better choice.. I block up the cut out in the 700 actions to help stiffen them up just a tad, but just think if I could get my hands on some 40X action maybe I could ring out about .127 more MOA from the rifle... Glad you could make the shootout and I will plan on seeing you next year. I will probably be shooting my same 45 and punching some gongs with the 416... We had quite a group of guys this go around. I couldn't ask for a better turn out or a better group of men... I would have shot a few more of the tannerite targets but I was busy with all the other things I had to do.. Besides once Deadeye shot the farthest one at 340 yards I figured,,,,"what the heck" Jeff

Phil, you would think it is extreme and it is high but not blow your mind crazy. I don't know if Jeff had a powder chamber but a straight .416 bore won't put that much force on the breech. If he has a .500 chamber it still is only about 14,000psi on the breech plug. If he used a 340gr bullet pressure should have been around 70,000 and velocity around 3100fps. A bit on the high side for most around town. If he used a 300gr bullet with 125gr h4350 he should have been around 64,000psi and a speed of 3200fps assuming a typical hankins length 30" tube. I will not condemn this pressure because I have determined my maximum pressure for the .375 to be around the same level. At this load 4350 is pretty efficient with a 99.8% burn. A slightly slower powder could be good but 4350 will probably be easy to light and more stable when it's run to the ragged edge of its capability. JMHO

Meyers, that would be 14,000 pounds of force on the plug if the chamber pressure was 70ksi.
