Gentlemen,Im planning a hunt to Colorado the first week in Sept. We are going in on horses and self guiding. Im looking for opinions on packs and gear,,,things I gotta have, hydration filters etc. My archery gear is ready to go, but if you have some advice on that topic, feel free. One of my concerns is packing in my bow on a horse. One of the guys suggested to get a back pack that holds a bow. Then ride the horse with the pack on his back. To me that is asking for trouble. One,tree limbs can hook on it and what if the horse throws you,,,,,. Any info and ideas are appreciated. THANKS

This is my first trip for archery/elk. I hunted near Craig Colorado with rifle 10 years ago. There are four of us going, but not a one of us has ever elk hunted public land. In our defense, all four of us are pretty savvy common sense outdoors men from Wisconsin. We have friends who rifle hunt every year out there and they have a wealth of knowledge and experience. I will never be foolish to say we know it all,,,because we don't. That is why I posted here,,to learn as much as I can.

The list of things I would consider to be important would be too long to list. Since you've been there and have friends who regular the Rockies, you have a pretty good idea of what's up. A few top of my list things would be, good lightweight/waterproof clothing, same criteria for boots, a Good GPS, A good reliable tent, lots of rope and tarps to make shelter, some good knives and sharpeners....The list goes on and on..The horses will def add another element, I've only used them once and that was to pack out meat. Plan your meals so you can take plenty with no worries, but not so you have way too much extra... lightweight as possible is the name of the game. I have a super nice sleeping bag that is priceless, its super light and very packable.. I have several different packs I take, all Cabelas brand, just take quality packs that will serve you well and hold up. Lastly, I take Gatorade powder mix, gives ya some flavor and breaks up the dullness of drinking water for days on end.. I carry two water bottles on my pack daily and sometimes and additional hydration pack when I know we are gonna be on the long hauls. Top quality flashlights and plenty of batteries are a must as well.. I'll quit rambling, elk hunting 101 can go on forever. You'll do just fine and GOOD LUCK! P.S. Maps of your area!!

Don't forget your release!!! Matter of fact better take two. No worse feeling than misplacing your release on a hunt.

The jury is still out... ohioguy- I have shared some of the same thoughts on not going this year but felt I would be way too grouchy for a whole year so I committed again making this 22nd year in a row. 1st year with a horse I had a bad one-got threw at least 7 or 8 times, the horse definetly had my number & guess hated me or anyone else except this large 6'6 Mexican guy.the horse rode like a dream for him & only him. 2nd year with a horse I had a great one & got some good hunting done. a good horse makes a huge difference especially when bushwhacking!

deadeye, that's cool you've been there so many times. I'll bet you've seen some sights and could share some great stories. I only used horses once, it was a huge help and a huge pain at the same time. We had them tiednto close together on night and one decided to kick another, which ended up in some redneck stitches to close the wound, and we tried using one to pull my mule deer up out of a steep draw, worked great til the horse got the deer to the top and we backed the horse up so we could process the deer and get the rope off, aparantely he got a wiff of blood from the deer or something and didnt like it. Im guessing it was close to a mile before we caught the horse, which was still dragging my deer. Oh well, it all worked out and lesson learned.

ohioguy, was that mule deer tender? Can't imagine what it looked like after that, lol. The only two things I remember for sure are, the deer was pretty much hairless over most of his body, and he didn't break the horns.... What a day that was....lol

Zen Funny looking back now for sure, at the time it was a case of shock and awe for an 18 year old's first trip to the Rockies and a first mule deer harvest....As a young "Hillbilly" in shock, I contemplated shooting the DA.. horse before he got out of sight but thought better of it.....lol (Couldn't afford to replace the horse or I likely would of....)
