Congratulations on a great message board! I've been deer hunting with muzzle loaders for almost twenty years now. Only started reaching out up to 300 yards a few years ago when I started hunting out west and the leap was mind blowing and addictive. Having missed the boat on the acquisition of a ss savage ml 10 a couple of years back, I "settled" for a cva accura v2. I'm using it with blackhorn209 and 300gr sst's and really like it.
Before that I used a ss rem700ml I purchased back in 1997. I loved this gun (except for the cleaning part) and was really sad when I retired it. But then yesterday I find out you guys are converting these to smokeless mls. I couldn't believe it! and the pictures I saw of the finished products were amazing!! So naturally, I'm looking at converting mine. But as I literally didn't know up until yesterday that this was even possible, I'm in the dark as to where to start- barrel options, stocks, breech plugs, who could do the conversion work etc. Hoping you guys could help. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the welcome and the info! Actually I came across Luke's name a few times last night while searching for info on the conversion. I sent him an e-mail but will probably take your advice and give him a call. I'm really looking forward to recycling the ol' 700ml !

Hello Rambler! Yes, tons of good info on here. BTW, I came across one of your posts about possibly converting a rem 700ml. Did you complete the build?

acekicker, I'm in the same boat as you and anxious to convert my SS Rem 700 ML also. I will be watching for your posts as you go. Good Luck I can't say I've taken those long range shots as you have... but someday soon,... maybe? Check one of the suggested sites: www.smokelessmz.com

Hello Rambler! Yes, tons of good info on here. BTW, I came across one of your posts about possibly converting a rem 700ml. Did you complete the build? I'm having a gun that I've owned for some time converted to smokeless. it's an H&R 45/70. break open action I'm going this route right now because it's cheaper than those excellent looking rempacs you see out here.
I've sent off the recv'r to Smokeless Muzzloading Inc. They use Douglas barrels. I had them use a 45 cal 1:22 30" blank. they will machine it down to specs, weld on the lug that fits to the recv'r drill/tap and fit it with a breech plug which uses a 209 primer
When I get it back, which should be in a cpl weeks, I'll have some follow up custom work done to it.
This will get me a good start into world of smokeless mz'ing. It should get out to 275 meters or so
I will get a rempac or something along those lines built...ithis time next year maybe...by then i'll have all the accessories bought and stocked up. it's
just a matter of rounding up the funds. I love those guns

Gemihur, I contacted Luke at www.smokelessmz.com, super nice guy and very helpful. He's supposed to send me some info on options for the build. Of course funding for this project is going to require some creative number crunching (not to mention a sizable Valentine's day gift) to get approval. Any opinions on Mcgowen vs Pacnor barrels?

If you want to shoot sabots then the pac nor is the way to go sabotless then go the McGowen way. If you get a sizing die then either will work. Read up on swingloc sizing die for more info. Both barrels are shooters.

Both barrels are shooters. RR I'm aiming to go sabotless but wanted to keep the use of saboted bullets as a possible option. How are soboted bullets affected differently when shot out of a McGowen? What other sobotless bullets besides the Parkers, do you recommend? From what I've read, I'd definitely use the Parkers for hunting, buy I'm looking for a lower cost alternative to use as a practice bullet.

325gr Hornady FTX or 300gr Barnes Original are economical. Your not gonna beat the ballistics of Parkers or Lukes 310gr ASG LLC High BC. check this web site out for the FF die, give Tom a call and discuss his dies, not to mention his MZ's www.swinglock.net/adjustablebsd.html

You can shoot saboted loads out of the McGowen you will have knurl the bullets to get a good fit also the knurl grips the sabot so you get good contact with sabot to bore.
Look at omega 45 profile he had shot sabot out of his McGowen.
