Roy from Sacramento here. I have a few years of experience in shooting/reloading/casting, but new to muzzleloading. I just bought a used .50 cal CVA Optima Pro and shot it about a dozen times last week. I'm working backwards from smokeless cartridges to inlines then maybe to percussion, then flintlock and maybe to making BP. I've already made the "just for fun" stuff with KNO3/Sulfer/Charcoal in a morter and pestal and burned it in the open, but never in a gun (yet). I like to introduce one new variable at a time in my learning curve so I'm starting with elimination of the cartridge. I've started with my own cast 240g 45ACP lead bullets in T/C sabots, BH209, Win209 primers and had a very successful first range trip. I will now put a scope on the gun and move from 25 yards out to 50 and 100 yards to see if this combination can get a decent group with a decent velocity. So far the BH209 performs very well and cleans up just as if I were shooting a .308 with Varget.
After that, I'd like to see if a dedicated ML bullet like a 300g REAL would do well or if maybe a 300g .452 cast bullet in a sabot is better.
I also have a CVA Kentucky rifle kit in .45 cal that's been sitting unbuilt in the garage for 30+ years and am toying with the thoughts of finally building it too.
I've been reading up as much as possible on these forums and hope to be able to have some fun with muzzleloaders.
Thanks.
