Took my 17 HMR to the range this afternoon to sight in the new scope. As I posted before I bought a Nikon Buckmaster, 4.5 - 14 with silver finish. I'd bore sighted it last week by putting it on my range rest and sand back, removed the bolt and sighted down the barrel. Picked a spot on the neighbors house, his door bell at 75 yds. When I got to the range I was on paper at 100 yds but about 4 1/2 inches low. Brought the scope up 4 inches and was 3/4 inch low and 3/4 to the right. One more adjustment and started plink and knocked the center out of 3/4 inch bullseye. That got boreing so pick up a few shot gun hulls and made those spin in the air. Then noticed that there were pieces of clay pigeons laying on the berm at 200 yds. Had to hold over by about 8 inches, but no problem. Actually found that where the fine cross hair grew to wider one was the right spot and I made smaller pieces out of the larger one, then smaller again . I'm pleased. Now look out gophers. Going out in the next couple of days to put some hurt on them ;D.

I have yet to hear a complaint on the .17 HMR. Everyone who gets one seems to think it was a wise purchase. I think it is the best thing that has come out in a long time. I love to shoot mine. I doubt the gophers enjoys it though.

Well just got back from the country. Went out this morning to test my scope. Unfortunetly it wasn't good gopher hunting weather. Temps were OK but windy and the spots I went to had tall grass so seeing them was tough. Did spot a couple but they were inside 100 yds. Blew the first on in half at about 40 yds. It was 1/2 in the hole and the shot pulled him right out and he did a couple of sommer saults in the air. 2nd one didn't do any aerobatics but flatten it too. Magpies found this one in short order. Not the test I was looking for but I think the scope will be just fine.

Are these Prarie Dogs RAF?
I agree with Ozark. This cartridge has been the coolest development is small arms in a long time. Extremely accurate in most guns. Flat enough that it puts a twinkle in your eye.
That small bullet also seems to have more punch then any .22 LR when it comes to decking smallish to medium sized (woodchuck) critters. If you want to eat rabbits and squirrels, you might want to head shoot them. If you're really good, you might use it to get DRT's on black bear. ;D

Not prairie dogs. Richardson Ground squirels, commonly called gophers. Yup, it's got plenty of punch. It should have more punch since the MV is double the 22 LR. Can hear a loud WOP when the bullet hits. Like I said it pulled the 1st one right out of his hole and flipped him in the air and tore him in half. Only thing more devasting is my 22-250 with a 40 grain V-Max at 4000 FPS
