Last year I bought myself a new toy, a Savage 17 HMR. It's a stainless, laminate thumbhole and looks great. I had a 3 - 9 Bushnell laying around but wanted something to match the stainless. I looked at the gun shop and stainless scopes were few and far between. They had a few. One was a high end stainless in 4 - 12 I believe, but in my mind I couldn't justify the expense for that rifle. I ended up buying a 3 - 9 Tasko. There's nothing wrong with that scope except all the adjustments are backwards from any other scope I've owned. I want a lot more magnification. My eyes aren't what they used to be . I like to shoot small objects and longer ranges, gophers out to 150 yds, I feel I need more magnification. Some of you younger guys, with perfect eyes will say 3 - 9 is plenty. Wait 30 or 40 years and tell what you think then . I've even considered taking the scope off my 22-250, a Bauch and Lomb 4200 Elite in 6 - 24 with a 1/4 minute target dot. I would be great on this 17 but it's a blued tube. I think I'll go have another look in the gun shop. Maybe they've got new inventory and something might just jump out and say "pick me", "pick me" ;D This is what I have right now.

Here's my family's run down on scopes for the 17HMR. These are all CZ's 2 burris fullfield II 3-9x with ballistic plex.....great scope for the money wished they had a little more mag 2 sightron 2.5-10x these are tough little and trim scopes, came off of the big ultra mags when we switched to shepherd scopes. But, hard to push out past 200yrdsd with out the witness marks on the reticle. 1 leo 3-9 VX-III same as sightron. 1 BSA sweet 17 2-7x my brother Todd swears by it...but he is slightly touched.................... 1 bushnell 3200 5-15... I simply love this rig but I would love it more if it had a ballistic plex type reticle. one more but I forget what's on it. To date I think every one is interested in switching to a burris fullfield II 4-12 with the ballistic plex or the shepherd. Hope this helps.

RAF,
That's a pretty gun and I would put a decent scope on it. Tasco's be damned.
If you can't find a silver match, just spray the whole gun with camo paint and be done with it. ;D ;D ;D Just kidding.
Do you find one loading that shoots better then others? For some reason, my gun loves the V-shock 17 gr poly tips. It likes all other ammo but loves this one.
I love my .17 and shoot it almost everyday at starlings and crows.

I haven't shot anything except the Hornady 17 gr V-max. I was looking to buy some the other day and they were all out. Offered me some 20 gr hollow points but that would mean adjusting the zero. It's almost gopher season and haven't got the time right now.

Well, I made a decision and acted on it before I changed my mind. Bought a Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14X40 with the silver finish. Has a "Nikoplex" reticle. Has the AO but it's mounted on the side of the tube instead of on the end which is normally the case with all other scopes I own. Now all that's left is to mount it, bore sight it and fine tune the zero. My laser bore sighter won't work on the 17, only good for 20 to 50 Cal. Will try the old fashioned way by removing the bolt and looking down the barrel and zeroing the scope.

I am looking at this rifle and the Marlin..Any comparison? I like Savage. But the Marlin's I have are real shooters. A marlin 39a and a 512 slugmaster. What kind of groups are the Savage giving you?

I don't own a marlin so can't do a comparison. I know this rifle shoots inside 1 inch at a 100 yds and probably better. Got the new scope mounted today and bore sights. Next bit of good weather, without wind, will find me at the range adjusting the zero.
