Here is this weeks haul on Yotes. The pic is minus 4 that are skinned out and in the freezer. The young man in the photo is my sons best bud and had never heard of snaring yotes. We let him tag along and dispatch one that had not expired. He is hooked!

You guys tore them up.... I have a young friend that snares a lot of yotes. He made the front page last week.. caught the local peta activist's dog in one and it hit the fan. Luckily the locals have made a stand with him. Everything he was doing was legit so it's going nowhere. Zen

Zen that brings a smile to my face! ;D I would love to shake that young mans hand! lol
Dwight I dont hit it as hard as I used so my catches are way down. It used to be that I would trap and snare all winter but with the mild winters of late I am busy with my real job. ;D Though you dont see the yotes much they are there and in large numbers. Remember the I-74 farm and the 2 long range BO does? We have pulled 28 yotes off of that 1 farm alone this year. They put the hurts on the rabbit population there this year so it was time to start thinning them song dogs out!

All I can say is Holy Cow! How much for a good yote pelt? Do you get many with Mange or other diseases? These ones all look pretty healthy and I've heard that the thicker the population is the more likely the diseases.

Yeah I sure do remember that farm, that is a great piece of ground for holding game. 28 off that one place is unreal. I usually kill 1 or 2 yotes during deer season but don't get out specifically for yotes anymore. I did not kill any yotes this year because I tagged out so quick I did not spend much time out in the field relatively speaking. Rick I know the season runs until March 15th like usual, but does the law still allow one to hunt coyote with written permission of the landowner all year round?

Wilms I have not encountered any sick ones or mange cases. I usually get maybe 1 mangy one a year. $5-$18 tops here. If they were stretched, fleshed and dried and sent off to auction you can double that amount but I do not have time for it.
Dwight you can still get after them year around with written permission.

I see a bag of mesquite wood chips in the picture. Do you guys smoke the meat of them dogs? ( I can't believe I beat DBinNY in saying that....that was right up his alley)

( I can't believe I beat DBinNY in saying that....that was right up his alley) While it is true I will eat most anything, for some unknown reason I kinda draw the line on stuff that has canine teeth. My buddies trap them and for some reason I don't start to salivate when I get near a carcass. I wouldn't expect Tar to eat them either. I'm not sure about Q. If you want to swap blackberry jam for 'em, I can arrange for that.

Tar12: How late in the season before the pelts are past their prime?

Jim...just about anytime now..though the weather is still cold rub spots begin to appear this late in the season and the rigors of surving the winter has taken its toll on them. I am just in eradication mode now. ;D They put the hurts on my favorite bunny spot and now I am going to put the hurts on them. I am going to work on them here at this spot well into the spring to let the bunnies rebound.

Yote are some of the nastiest smelling varmints out there. They have a urine soaked/rancid meat smell to them. The carcasses we dispose of dont even get touched by other critters..they just rot away.

+1 on the foul flesh on a coyote.
My son did a science project years ago that involved boiling fur bearing mammal skulls. The beaver head smelled like it needed some carrots and onions. The coyote was simply the strongest foulest wet dog smell you could imagine. I have heard it said that timber wolves will eat them. I have never seen any sign of it happening

I read an article years ago that said post WWII there were plans made in the event of war on our mainland USA against a foreign invader. As part of this preparation, US Green Berets were given the task on developing plans on how they would act as "force multipliers" by disbursing among the populace and training them to fight as a cohesive force. As part of this planning, the Green Hats decided they needed to know for sure just what birds, reptiles, and mammals were fit to eat. So they set out just to see for themselves. The article I read stated that while obviously some animals were more palatable then others, only the coyote was deemed unfit for food of everything they tested.

I have heard wolves will kill them (perhaps they are competition) but I have not heard if they will eat them.

I went to a Sportsman Dinner couple years ago. There was everything from elephant, rhino and yes coyote. I tried everything. I must say the coyote had no strong gamey taste at all. Properly fixed I would eat it again.
