I've carried a LCP for awhile now and believe it's a good choice, both easy to conceal and I believe the 380 will do the job if necessary, buttttt I've decided to make a change for no other reason other than that I sometimes like to change things up. Anyhow, I horse traded some things around and went out bought me a new Springfield XDS 45acp.... Just shot a couple boxes of reloads so far and it seems to be a keeper. So far it's been reliable and accurate both. It's also going to hide well. Single stack mag and a 3" barrel makes it easy. I like the thought of a little more bang for your buck if needed. Zen

You are going to like it even more the more you shoot it. Both my father and father in law each have the new xds and both are happy campers. I also just upgraded my carry from an LCP to an M&P shield and couldn't be happier. Now go find a good holster and your set. Heres a pic of my Shield in my everyday carry holster.

I saw some you tube vid's of a guy shooting that small 45 over a chrony. He was getting speeds in the 500-600 fps range with big spreads. Does anyone have any hard data on stuff like that?
One of the "kids" at camp got a .45 XDS this fall and loves it but we never chronied it. If it does speed test that low I wonder if that would impede penetration. I guess I wouldn't want to shoot at hard targets at those speeds....things would maybe bounce all over the place and maybe back at the shooter.
It is a vary compact piece I must say

It is a vary compact piece I must say I plan on shooting it through a chrono.. The reloads I shot today averaged 775-800fps in my 5" barrel 1911. I read on the xds forum that you lose around 100 fps compared to a full barrel. I'll shoot it side by side with my 1911. I had a Springfield Compact 45 with a 4" barrel and there wasn't much of a difference. This new one is a little bulldog that's for sure. Let you know in the next day or so. 03 mossy... That's a nice setup you got there.. I looked at the shield [nice pistol].... But I wanted a 45 and liked the size of the XDS Zen

I guess I wouldn't want to shoot at hard targets at those speeds....things would maybe bounce all over the place and maybe back at the shooter. It is a vary compact piece I must say Here's some hard data for you Wilms..... 5 shots each string I went out today with my chrono, my XDS .45 [3" barrel], my 1911 .45 [5" barrel] , one box of 200gn LSWC/ 5.2gns W231, and one box of 230gn LRN 5.2gns W231... Same bullet and same powder load for each gun... Here's the lowdown... [XDS] 3" barrel String #1 200gn LSWC 761 756 768 796 736 763avg ES 60 String #2 230gn LRN 723 767 761 772 726 749avg ES 49 [1911] 5" barrel String#1 200gn LSWC 834 842 787 848 832 828avg ES 61 String#2 230gn LRN 796 792 831 820 802 808avg ES 39 These reloads were all thrown with a RCBS Uni Flow Powder measure so there will always be a slight variance in speed. Seems to me the 3" barrel is not losing as much you originally thought... They definately won't be bouncing back in your face. A 230 gn bullet going at 750fps will ruin anyones day.. The 200gn bullets are a little less on the recoil end and the LSWC's feed and function perfectly every time you pull the trigger..... I'm happy Zen
