I just finished my New Mexico elk hunt with ML. Solo, DIY elk hunting is tough! No quad, no horses, just an old fat guy that wanted to get an elk. I saw elk and bulls every day of the hunt. Many of the bulls were small 5x5 juveniles. I did see one nice 6x6 that had a couple cows with him but the closest I could get was 500 yards. A little far for my Omega. Yesterday I watched a saddle and saw elk moving about 300 yards away. Dang, I was too late they already crossed over the ridge. I plopped my butt down and waited a bit. After 45 minutes or so a cow walked within 15 yards from me. She bedded down about 20 yards away until the wind shifted and she didn't like what she smelled. She took off and I hear something behind me. I turn around and see 2 small bulls about 75 yards away. Someone once told me don't pass up a elk on day one that you will shoot on day 5. I picked the largest of the 2 and sent a 300 gr SST through his ribs. He ran 50 yards and piled up. We were almost on top of the mountain and recovery was difficult at best. I had to get the carcass 3/4 mile down the ridge to my truck. I have a Cabelas Mag Hauler Cart that helped me get the elk out with only 2 trips. It was super difficult going down a steep rocky ridge with the cart though. Better than 5 trips with a backpack.

Its only till you get one of those down on the ground till you look around and realize what a mess you got yourself into and what work you got cut out for yourself. Great job on your shot and your hunt. Enjoy your meat.

Big time Edward! I swore I would not put in for elk again. It is a lot[/b] of work. I had a plate full of elk tenderloin tonight for supper. I guess I will put in again next year. I am a glutten for punnishment.

AJ
Congrats on your successful hunt. The younger ones make for better eating for sure.
Yeah big game is a lot of work but worth the effort in my book. Endure being able to do it while you can as there will come a time when the body can’t handle it alone no more.
