The 96 mauser is the swedish mauser or or the shorter model 38. Chambered in 6.5X55 it was a pretty popular surplus rifle for sporting use. The main difference between the 96 and the 98 is the bolt. On the 96 the bolt cocks on closing and on the 98 it cocks on opening. One popular one is the M38 which was like the carbine model that was adopted in 1938 and had a bent bolt handle that is more suited for scope use. The 96/38 was made from 1896 until like 1944 and wasn't withdrawn from active duty completely to the mid 1990s. Supposedly the standard sniper rifle until the 1990s were worked over 96/38s called M41s, much like the US Springfield that stayed in service till the start of Vietnam.

I do not know what kind of project your coming up with but there is a few things to know about Mausers. You have large ring and small ring actions, a large ring is 1.4" diameter and a small ring is 1.3". Usually a large ring action will have a barrel shank of 1.1" with 12 TPI and small rings will have a barrel shank of .980" with 12 TPI. Then there are action lengths, short has a screw spacing of 7.620 and long has a spacing of 7.835". What you run into is a mix of all the above factors depending on the model and even the country it was made for.
Probly the best one to modify and get aftermarket parts for is a large ring, large shank barrel long action which is a German 98K, some of the South American models, the Spanish M-43/44, CZ-24 and other models. There are a bunch of clean Yugo M-48s on the market cheap that are large ring, large barrel shank but are short actions. The ones to run away from are the dirt cheap (less then $100) Turkish Mausers which most have some weird barrel shank sizes/threads.
