My buddy just found these negatives after all these years and I just got them transferred over to disk. I have never seen them before.
Interesting back story. Sorry if this gets long winded.
My ML for the trip was Savage MLII 250 XTP MMP short black sabot and 44 Gr Vitavouhri N110. 3.5 x 10x x 40 MM Leupold V3 Scope set on the lowest setting. Those 250 XTP just work. My buddy was shooting a .308 Remington 700 custom. 165 Gr Nosler Partition if I recall correctly.
We had gotten a late start that day and did not make it to the area we were hunting till about 45 min till dark. Went to a area of the Catoosa Management area that in previous years showed a lot of sign. It was down in a bottom area near the Obed river. Long story short there were 8 hogs below us. We both timed our shots both firing at the same time and landed them right there.
Then we looked down and it had not occurred to us how we were going to get them out of there. It was 100 foot drop strait down and 250 yards away. I marked our shooting location on the GPs and we drove down to the area where the Creek mouth was and hiked in till the GPS told us we were in at the spot we needed to be. After a little surveying with flashlights we found the hogs. Then came the fun part. The terrain was so rough and steep we could not get them out. We tried a variety of methods including hanging them from a stick and trying to carry them out. None of them worked. So the decision was made to come back the next morning and quarter them up and pack them out on our backs. We did not get back to the motel room till midnight that night. Got up the next morning at 5 am,,went to walmart and got some extra rope and a couple of packs and returned to the kill area. Quartering took us a hour or so to do and It took us 5 trips to get all the meat out and the hides. The hike in was about a mile each way.
Probably one of the most rewarding trips I have ever been on. I would think twice today before taking that shot again.
