Decided yesterday that I would shoot the trap shoot at the gun club in the morning and then in the afternoon drive to the Rock Pit and do some PRB shooting with one of the Renegades.
#11 Renegade is the one in the middle. It is a 50 cal with a Lyman peep sight and a fiber optic front sight. This is one of the rifles that I use for shooting local Rondy events. Our Rondy events are really family oriented and they will allow us to use this sight set-up for the shooting events.
I do not shoot enough PRB's to become really proficient at it but I really do enjoy toying with it.
But today something, and I do not know what, but everything went right. I was able to spend all afternoon making good use of my time and my shots. I had a couple of goals in mind, I wanted to shoot birds from 12 yards to 100 yards - I also wanted to shoot off the bench to check the gun and if I had the gun sighted in from last season.
At 12 yards I held directly on the bird and it was pretty much a splat shoot. Then moving to the 25 yards birds again held directly on the birds and they were blown away. At 50 yards things changed... I held directly on the middle of the bird - and missed -> Twice!!!. So I walked down range to check the snow to see where the shots were going. Both balls had passed directly above the bird - just missing the bird. Came back and applied a 6:00 hold on the 50 yards bird and they were toast. At the 75 yard birds - I repeated the 6:00 hold on the birds and got the same results as the 50's - broken birds....
Moving to the 100 yard birds I gotta tell you I was not holding a lot of hope getting ball into the birds. I thought I would be close - close enough for Rondy targets at 100 yards as usually they are much larger than a 3" bird. In the beginning because of my lack of confidence I only put out 3 birds, thinking it would take me more than 3 shots to get the birds and at a 100 yards through open sights they are not very big!!!
To my surprise again holding more or less a 6:00 hold on the birds, I felt the front bead was just barely in the bottom of the bird, The first shot connected as did the next two... I was pumped
Excited enough to take another 5 birds down and place them on the wall. Well, when I picked the first one off with the first shot I was really feeling good so I figured I would get a picture of the remaining 4 before blasting them.
This was by far the most succesfull day I have ever had shooting PRB's and it was really fun and gave a sense of accomplishment... Now if they would just allow me to use the bench or sticks at the Rondy event... not going to happen though... I hope to get out few times before March 4th. and work on shooting off hand at targets at the different ranges. I did buy a pack of red paper plates to help me... they should be easier to hit than the birds from the off hand.
I was shooting:
70 grains T7-2f
Speer 490 Round Balls
Wonder Wad between powder and patch
.015 Cotton patch lube with a special lube (blue in color)
#11 cap
GREAT DAY
