Second shotgun season opens next weekend, I'll take the Savage ML but I'm taking the Super Redhawk .44 also. I've never shot a deer with a handgun. In Iowa you can use a 357 or larger straight walled case during shotgun season. I shot some 240 XTP over H110 and some 255 gr cast with gas check. Both will do the job. No scope so I'm not shooting past 50 yrds.

Good luck. I can't trust my pistol shooting ability with my Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt, so have never tried it on game. Hopefully you will have better weather than what's out there today!!

Have shot several deer with a 44mag, Redhawk and Desert Eagle. This year I picked up a BFR 45-70 with an extra 450 Marlin cyl. Figured the 450 would be legal since it is a straight wall case. Called the DNR in Des Moines and he read off the list of cal. that were legal and the qualifications and no 450. Another thing he read that was interesting was you have to shoot an EXPANDING bullet. A non expanding bullet to me would be like a 45ACP ball. Weather or not a solid lead bullet falls in that category I honestly don't know. I don't think an officer would ever ask to look at your bullets but there are some real jerks out there. good luck next week Dave

The 45-70 is legal isn't it?? I'm looking at scopes for the SRH. Maybe next year. I'd like to give one of the Weavers a try. I can keep my shots in 6 inches at 50 yards. Not great but good enough for deer. I said I'd shoot at 50 but if ones closer that would be OK.

Yes the 45-70 is legal. I was like you looking at scopes but went with a Ultra dot 30 on my BFR 45-70. Got it from Ultra dot west. This is the first dot sight I have used on a firearm and I love it. A lot cheaper than a scope with lifetime warranty. Good luck Dave

I've taken many deer with handguns, I've used a S&W 629, TC Contender w/ a 44mag barrel and a 375win barrel.

Went out yesterday and saw 5 in ML range. Nothing close enough for the SBH, see what this afternoon brings.

I use a Ruger Super Redhawk 454 Casull and its a hand full at times. I practice out to 100 yards but Im real comfortable 50 and under. I hunted 5 days with it this year but had nothing close enough to shoot. Mike

Guess I struck out. Saw 9 deer all but one close enough to shoot but they came in behind me. Had one at 10 yards straight behind me but I couldn't get turned around to shoot

Well got a shot, not a good one but I'm getting closer. I think I shot over the top of her. No hair no blood. Last few minutes of the day, about 30 yards.

Went down to the wire. Season closed last night around 5:00. A big doe came out just before that. Had to take her with the rifled slug-gun about 100 yards. I'll give it a try next year. I't was fun.

During our firearms season, I normally carry a 44 contender with me as well as my ML. For several years I only hunted with handguns. I used a 7-08 Encore pistol, and a SBH. I traded the SBH for a contender and a 44 mag barrel from Virgin Valley, and I've never looked back. 50 yds would be a very easy shot with it. It shoots very accurate with a 240gr XTP and a hot charge of H110 and is pretty flat out to 75 yards (+1800fps). Starts to drop a little after that, but is still doing well at 100. I've busted clay pigeons at 200 yds with it shooting from a rest and a concrete bench. Makes for fun plinking These days I normally just use my ML. The Contender works well for a follow up shot on a second deer, or when someone has wounded one and we are tracking it. I'm surprised at how poorly some of the guys shoot. I can do better at 50 yards with the contender, shooting off hand then they can do with a ML shooting off the tail gate using a jacket as a rest, and I'm not just talking about bullet placement, but also group size. Sad. Dad used a SBH for several years, but his failing eye sight always made it difficult for him to shoot it well. He tried several types of optics, but never found any that he liked that would also stay put on the gun. I think the revolvers are best left to open sights. He too moved to a Contender a few years after I did, and it has served him much better than the SBH. He's good with it to 50 yards or so under the right conditions. Anyway, welcome to handguning!

Finally got a chance to see what the BFR 45-70 would do. Had a bunch of does headed towards me and decided to lay down my rifle and give it a go. They came within 50yds and stopped, bad mistake..put the ultra dot on her front shoulder and squeezed. Bang flop. In and out both shoulders. Lefthand, I too have bad eyesight, and have to have scopes or dots on my rifles. Have a red dot on my cross bow and a red dot on my BFR. There the cats meow when shooting close range. The Ultra dot was the only dot sight guaranteed to withstand the recoil of the 45-70 or 450 Marlin revolvers. I actually learned about an eye problem I have called Astigmatism. When I installed my dot sight and looked thru it, the dot was not round it looked like a comma. I called them to complain and after doing a test they put me thru, I found out it was me and not the sight. [Get My next eye appointment will deal with that]Was not a fan of red dots, being the worlds biggest skeptic even I have to admit they have there place. Might be worth looking into.

Made a shot on a running hog at 25 yds.... I really love it and highly recomend it. Drop
