Shooting a Savage 210 with a custom Chris Young barrel, a SAvage 220 , and Remington 1100 with a stock rifled barrel all seem to shoot better groups at 100 yds. with a dirty barrel. All have their ammo likes and dislikes but all shoot better dirty. Has anyone else noticed this ?

Your rifle will shoot differently too. I never clean my rifle or shot gun barrel after I sight it in till after the season, OR I shoot two shots to "Foul" it before I NEED it...

With custom rifle barrels I notice less of a POI shift/grouping than with anything else. Using same barrels and bullets coated with hBN shifts are almost non-existent. I intend to try coating some full bore 12GA slugs but haven't had time yet.
My slug gun and a couple of factory rifles show fairly significant shifts. Once they are zeroed I only wipe the barrels out with alcohol. I'll do a full clean if the gun gets wet or dirty and then I shoot it again to foul and confirm zero.

I have several autoloader slug guns and each one of them is different. My latest gun, a SX3 slug gun, shoots best when the barrel is dirty. Some of my guns shoot their best groups with a newly cleaned barrel, others shoot better groups between 4 to 12 shots or so.

I agree with slugger. After qualifying for the upcoming season, I don't clean my slug gun until after Maryland's late shotgun season closes in early January. My 1st shot out of a clean barrel is usually a "throw away".

Is your throw - away slug one of the same type you shoot at game ? Or a slug from a type that did not group well and are just sitting around gathering dust ? The gunsmith that custom barreled my Savage 210 thought you should use the same shell as you hunt with to foul the barrel... same powder, same type plastic sabot. Certainly no Foster types to foul the bore with lead.

bryguy...I know what you are saying. I saw less than half the deer I usually see in nine days of hunting. In NJ we had the heat and drought then the rain in August that causes the ''midge fly'' that spreads Blue Tongue to hatch..mostly in swampy areas. In the swampy areas of the township that I live and work in I estimate about 75% of the deer died in about a month. Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I have shot 'em after hurricane Floyd, shot 'em when it's hot ( 88 degrees ), and shot 'em when it's been awfull dry but I can't shoot 'em when they are already dead !!! However East Carolina is still a great place !! Stay in touch.
