If you can find a insurance company that will cover any medical expenses incurred from going against the reccommendations of manufactures then take out the insurance and do the testing alone. If it works once, twice and three times she may well explode on no. 4. The whole idea is foolish in my opinion. If after all the replies you bulldoze ahead then you are a wonder.

Cowhunter has likely been asked (or is asking himself) if he can use smokeless in a gun not made for it. I have been asked by MANY ML owners after I bought my Savage, "why cant I just use smokeless in my gun?" I got tired of arguing with them and explaining the simple reason why they must not. I simply started saying "are you trying to make your gun shoot backwards? Thats what will happen." But the widespread temptation seems to be there. Unfortunate.
Now lets all go jump off a brige. I heard of someone doing it once.

I think manufacturers dont reccomend reloads due the chance of human error, stupidity, double loads etc. Reloads done properly are safe. You would be following a recommended (powder company) load recipe right?
This is completely different. Properly loading an Oncore with smokeless powder is not safe. There IS no recommended load. By the gun or powder company.

Dang it! doc and fishhawk are correct! Really seems silly to have a post that contemplates stupidity. Thats the real answer. Is it stupid? Probably shouldnt do it then. I vote to delete. Even if there is no vote. Sorry I got suckered in.

SNIP. On a side note, what exactly is a cowhunter? It doesn't seem very challenging, they are not exactly elusive creatures. Hmmm, I was wondering what a female elk is called...I just can't think...it is on the tip of my tongue....nope can't think of it edge.

In Hawaii they used to let you shoot wild cows. And a female elk is a cow.

In Hawaii they used to let you shoot wild cows. And a female elk is a cow. I think they still do, and I think that is what cowhunter is doing, and where On a tangent there was a guy on a primitive archery site I used to frequent that was making his own trad bows from native woods and hunting the same cows. He said they were really mean

Moving this post was right. I'm sorry I put it in the wrong place. Thanks everyone for putting up with newbies. The issue is probably just a nuisance to everyone since no forum members would use an "Oncor". That being said, I think that after someone pays $700 for an "Oncor", that the manufacturer is not entitled to dictate how it is used. I've always believed in freedom of choice after a free exchange of facts, ideas and experience. Manufacturers, other than Savage, won't reveal their pressure testing results, and this may actually cause some to believe they are safe. sure it's your choice if you want to blow your fool head off,,,, they are just telling ya that you will be a fool to do so,,,

Two table spoons of common sense makes the answer obvious.

Cowhunter rifle grade steel with a center fire frame you make the call. But let me give you a warning we don't know if the barrel is heat treated and I don't think the breach plug is and it has a gap between it and the frame, no support and a running start with the breach plug wouldn't be a good thing even if the barrel didn't blow you would have tons of pressure and I mean tons blowing back in your face even with safety glasses your eyes and face would be gone.

I've long had an idea kind of like cowhunter's, but I continue to put off pursuing it. It involves purchasing the strongest and cheapest ML I can find; nowadays that might be the CVA Optima pistol. I'd clamp it to a mount and arrange a remote trigger pull. The whole affair would be located in a basement excavation in a remote portion of a Western state. I'd work up loads of something like 4227 until I got to 1800 fps with a 240 grain bullet. Then I'd continue to shoot loads of that size until the gun failed or I saw clear signs of imminent failure (such as breach plug erosion or barrel bulge).
It would cost me a couple hundred dollars and some time, but I'd really like to know how strong such a muzzleloader actually is.
