Well this is the second season I personally have used the fallowing sabot slug for hunting:
Federal Barnes Tipped Expanders in 12 gage, .75oz, 2.75" magnum.
This year I shot a total of two large does and one coyote with them. Doe #1 was at LRF confirmed 66 yards, doe #2 was at 176 yards also confirmed by LRF.
Doe #1 was quartering sharply towards me at the shot. The .50 caliber .75oz 100% copper slug made a thumb sized entry hole broke her shoulder passed through both lungs and made a exit hole at least 1.5" in size. After the shot, she made a sharp turn to my, traveled 25-30 yards and piled up. The blood trail obviously short, was massive none the less. I examined the lungs and there was a golf ball sized hole through both.
Doe #2 was almost the exact opposite of doe#1 in she was quartering away from me. I aimed for the opposite shoulder and the slug entered the rib cage exploding the rib it passed through, did identical damage to both lungs as in doe #1, passed through and broke the off shoulder and once again left a exit hole at least 1.5" accross. This doe was DRT.
My friend has had identical on game performance on both bucks and doe's with these slugs.
While hunting last Saturday I spotted a lone coyote cutting across a sugar beet field. I got my cross hairs on him and used a tree limb for a rest. He stopped for a moment and I shot. He flew off his feet sideways, rolled around a little and stopped moving. I hit him with my LRF and it said 173 yards. The slug again made a thumb sized entry hole and a very large exit hole. I felt this was impressive expansion given how narrow the yote was VS the doe's I shot, yet the all copper Barnes tipped expander expanded perfectly based on the exit hole I saw.
I site in 3" high at 100, are dead on at 150 yards and 7.5" low at 200.
Unique thing about this slug that I like so much VS ANY other sabot slug I have EVER shot is I have never ever shot a 3-shot 100yrd group larger than 1.5". All of my 100yrd groups are between 1" to 1.5".
My 200yrd groups average around 3.5".
The firearm I use these in is my Browning A-Bolt 12 gage slug rifle. IMHO, the A-Bolt is the finest production slug gun ever made.
Anyone needing a superb performing slug good out to 200yrds, should seriously consider the Federal Barnes Tipped Expanders.
I bought a case of them for $9.95 per box from Sportsman's Warehouse, which is the best price I found for a high performance sabot slug.
They are now my sabot slug of choice and will be from now on.
