October 16th, Second day of Early ML Season in the north country Rainy and windy for the first several days, but it kept the deer moving somewhat. The second day of the season my son and I went in to watch the Bills game, and headed back out at 4:10 pm. At 4:46 I sent my son a text with the picture of this buck laying in the woods. I was on stand less than 5 min, still had not pulled on my camo gloves and when he came off a ridge of oaks. Usually I pack a lunch and stay out all day, or in the late season December cold come in for a quick hot lunch. Maybe I should do more of this goofing off in the middle of the day! 50 cal Savage ML II, 250 SST, HPH 12 Sabot 43.0g VV N110 WW primer Double lung shot at 65 yards. Hit square on rib going in and took out a 2 inch section. Two exit holes on rib cage going out. One was from the copper jacket which was just under the skin and had separated. Bled profusely . He ran about 40 yards before he went down trying to head up a slope. I watched him go down. This is fifth deer I have taken with this load, others were does from 110 to 170 yards. Three were DRT, two have gone 40 or 50 yards but dropped in sight.

Northny
Congrats on a nice buck and thanks for the particulars of your load.
That facial smile and eye expression sums it up nicely.

Eating well? You mean me or the deer? ;D
He was coming off a ridge of oak trees, into a field that had sections of uncut hay, then cut hay, then grass clover and chickory, then brassicas as you move across field. Plenty of food around from April to January in the fields. HE had plenty of fat on him. Stomach full of grass and clover. They have not begun to touch the brassicas yet.

Congrats an a nice one for the Early Season. Most of my nice and my largest Bucks have been taken between 10:30 AM and 2:30PM. Seems like guys get bored, stiff or cold and need to walks around. That also is a boost to the chances of the patient sitter or still hunters.
