The XP-100 I shot today was built with a 15" Shilen 1 - 14" barrel with a tight neck (.262") 6mmBR. The gun had shot very well with bullets up to 70 gr. I had used it for a 500 yard Egg Shoot and did middle of the pack with about 150 shooters all using rifles.......mostly custom BR guns. I thought I could do better if I could shoot a 105 or 108 VLD Berger so I took a 1 - 8.5 slightly used Douglas barrel and chambered it in the same cartridge I use for 600 BR. Its the 6mmBRX. It did not shoot to bad but the problem was recoil I need to use BR type scope with minimal eye relief and in order to shoot this gun accurately, you can barely hold the grip while trying to make that 2 oz. trigger break ;D Consequently, with the heavier bullet and increased case capacity the recoil wanted to put the scope into my eye If I shot if off the bench, I could control it but the Egg Shoot is shot from the ground. So, I re-installed the 6BR barrel which has been sitting idle for the past two years.
The 6 BR had done really well shooting the 70 gr. Sierra MK's but as I looked thru my bullets I spotted some 58 gr. V-Max's which I had never shot thru this barrel. So, I kind of picked thru my load information and came up with 33.5 gr. of Varget. I happened to have fifty rounds of Remington 7mmBR brass already necked down and neck turned for this gun which had previously been to Montana PD hunting. The reamer I have is actually for the 6mmBR Norma with is a .050" longer case and the primer hole is smaller than on the Remington's. In order to get the 58 V-Max to touch the rifling I did not quite have enough case neck to hold the bullet (this reamer has a long freebore). I managed to get them pretty close but only have about .050" or less holding the bullet (you don't want to stuff them in your pocket ;D) Anyway, they do stay in but boy did they shoot!
I see Hornady also has a 65 gr. V-Max which I plan on trying also since at 500 yrds you can use all the BC you can get.
