Today the high was 35 degrees. 2/28/2009
I'm actually amazed that the 45 rocks compared to the 50 with the Lehigh 200grn bullets.
140grns of BH209 with Federal 209A Primer and MMP sabots were used in both calibers.
50caliber avg velocity was = 2287 45caliber avg velocity was = 2523
Hunting season is a long way away. It's going to be very hard not to use this 45cal Knight Disc Elite.

I am not surprised that ANY .45 BP gun would not rock ANY .50 cal BP gun using an identcal charge. The smaller barrel will make pressure easier and even though you are using the same charge you are using MORE....if you get my drift.
As an example, imagine the extreme: A 3 inch bore!! 140 grains will barely put a layer of powder on the face of the breech plug and a 250 grain bullet would look like a silver dollar or thinner. So inefficient that's it's a laughable example...but makes the point. With a very efficient load in a .45 the same exact powder charge and bullet weight will get progressively less efficient as bore size is increased.
You also see the same thing with guys posting results with powders like H4198 in the smokeless guns. It takes substantially less powder to achievee the same results with the same bullets when comparing 45 vs 50. If you used H4198 in the same doses in a .45 that some use in a .50 there would be over-pressure problems big time.
What you are getting in both guns is awesome for a BP gun. Sounds like BH209 is really special so far. Also, the Disc guns are excellent guns that always seem to shoot well. We have 4 of them spread out in our camp. 2 of them are still in service with some up-and-coming teenagers. They shoot them as well as their dad's did and are not under gunned in the woods by any stretch of the imagination! In the summer of 2000, I shot a pile of woodchucks with mine using 140 gr FFG and 300 XTP's. MOA all day in warm temps. Woodchucks inside 150 were simply dead and made a few shots out at the 200 yd line. Speed was 1,650 and the load opened up in cold deer weather.
Didn't mean to wander off base....I just loved those guns. I hope your testing revives interest in these guns. Some folks NEED them in their states to be legal. The substantial speed gains you are posting, along with accuracy and cleaner operation is BIG news for these guns!!
Look forward to more of your posts Grouse.
