Has anyone here tried leeches for Bass fishing.
While fishing a more Northern Lake one summer the fishing was very slow so I decided to go to the local bait shop and see if they would recommend some bait or another approach to catching some bass that was one of the dominant species in the lake. The owner suggested I try leeches. I guess I gave him a dumb look as this was something new to me and was wondering if he was pulling my leg. When he noticed I was apprehensive about trying them he took a little of his time as it was a slow day for sales to explain to me why they are so affective. Then he offered me my first dozen at half price because he felt confident I would be back for more. He was right as I returned to purchase at least another 2-dozen before the end of that week.
On my first outing with leeches I hooked one as described/recommended and tossed it out with no weight attached to the line. As the leech was settling into the water I laid down my rod to grab a cold pop. As I was retrieving my cold drink I heard my rod move and when I glanced at it the tip was arched right over and my rod ready to flip out of the boat. With a quick grab I caught my rod and had a real fight on my hands. End result was a 3-4lb bass. I thought this was great and put another leech on the hook to try this again but this time I was going to hang onto my rod. Sure enough in a short time got a good hard hit but only a small bass this time about 1-1/2lbs. This continued throughout the week with about 1 in 5 hits producing a nice size bass. What really surprised me was how hard the hits were no matter what size the bass.
What the bait shop owner basically pointed out to me was that the leech was a natural enemy to the bass. If one was seen by a bass nearby they would strike at it to kill it.
Just wonder if anyone else has tried fishing for bass with leeches.
