I have all the mags I'll ever need for my AR, but I keep hesitating to pull the trigger to buy more for my .45 taurus 24/7. Mags cost about $40 each, I only have the one that came with it. Gun is used for range mostly, but I keep wondering about what if the chit hit's the fan. Hopefully I wouldn't have to shoot more than 12 times, but you never know On average how many mags do you have for your semi-auto pistol and why?

I think I would want 3 because 2 will fit in your back pocket pretty good, just in case you ever need them in a hurry.

My min rule is 13 for long guns, 1 in the gun, 12 on the belt. Handguns 5, 1 in the gun 4 on the belt. Of course I have been told I am an ammo hoarder too, so take it with a grain of salt. But runnin out of ammo at the wrong time is not on my list of things to try.

It's nice to have about 5 so you can spend more time shooting than reloading at the range, that being said the only guns I have that many for are my 10/22 and my Garand. I have not pulled the trigger for my autos yet.
For carry, I don't even take a spare mag when carrying an auto (10-13 rds depending on model). I figure a) chances of me really having time to fish a mag out and reload, and still be in a situation that justifies shooting after 13 rounds, is about zero. Either they will run or I will already be dead. b) if you DO shoot someone in self-defense, and are carrying a pile of extra mags, you may get painted as a gun freak looking for the shootout at the OK Corral.

Thanks fellas. I have a cabelas gift card burning a hole in my pocket and don't really need anything at the moment, two mags will wipe it out but man it's almost as bad as buying ink cartridges for a printer

I have 4 by default. Two that came with my .45 and are now in storage and two that I purchased (Wilson Combat) as a result of recommendations/reviews from folks concerned with weak springs/bullet compresson problems. They are rather expensive though.

I found a solution for the ink carts though: CISS system cost about what two ink cartridges and goes almost forever! When ink is gone you just squirt more in. Kinda like a endless cartridge belt. www.printpayless.com/

The only correct answer is ALL of them ;D If you can't find them all, then you at least want to be in double digits per weapon.

I think 6 for the pistol and 12 for the rifle. My Glock came with three only need 3 more. My AR came with 11 of the 30 round variety and I picked up a 20 rounder for hunting. I like the factory mags for the 10-22 and the mark III and have 3 for each as the magazine belt carriers hold 2.
