I got back to the range last night to try another load, and it was cold I did have another range trip after hunting the other day to try three different loads and they were no better, actually a bit worse than the first trip. First, this is a full Custom Savage with a #7 taper barrel designed for a 458 win mag 1:14 twist. The load is getting a bit stout @ 90 grains total weight for the 285 grain bullet/sabot. The accuracy while not much better, it shows more promise if I exclude shot #5. My setup was not great as I am still in hunting mode. The sling knocks the front bag when recoiling so that may be adding to my usual poor target shooting "When does 4 MOA make you smile?" 1st thread link: dougva.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Savage&thread=11118&page=1

8-)Mark I'm curious at what speed you're at now, if you timed the load?

I have not timed it yet as I am shooting underground and its too dark and not a lot of room in the tunnel. I would guess in the 2800fps range...perhaps a bit more. Depending on the weather Saturday I may go to an outdoor range where I can chronograph it. I won't be upping the load until I do edge.

Underground? What the heck?!?! How do you get access to a tunnel?

Underground? What the heck?!?! How do you get access to a tunnel? One of the clubs that I belong to has an underground rifle range. Nothing fancy, a two port 100 yard range. It does make it nice to shoot in all weather, but we have to stop shooting at 11 PM so the neighbors can sleep edge.

Who the heck can hear you when you are shooting under ground? ? "Nightcrawlers" Actually you can feel the shots through the ground from a fairly long range, probably a few hundred yards in all directions. The sound is not real loud above ground, but there is the shooting building and then the target building neither is completely soundproof even though the doors are kept shut during shooting. jeremylong, thanks for asking that question! By making me tell you about the range you opened up my eyes! I have always thought of chronographing near the muzzle, but the target building is very well lit. I see no reason that I can't chronograph a few feet in front of the target and then compute the initial velocity from the 100 yard velocity. edge.

Edge
I see the shrinking process has begun. The question that haunts me is at what point does that smile change to a grin from ear to ear? ;D
Look forward to following your accuracy venture and what it reveals.
