I started to post this in the smokeless muzzle loader section but forgot I didn't shoot these bucks with a muzzle loader this year. This year I built a .358 BFG(WSSM) wildcat pistol caliber rifle which is legal in Indiana for deer hunting. Its a .25 WSSM necked up to .358 and shortened .060. The cartridge has to be 1.625 or less. It has a McGowen barrel on a Savage 16 Weather Warrior action. Our season opened Saturday, 13 Nov and on Sunday evening around 5pm I shot this nice 10 pointer with many stickers (he's actually a 16 pointer) about 40 yards from my stand. He was chasing a piebald doe. I hit him threw the right shoulder with 180 grain Speer FP and it broke the opposite shoulder. He did the snow plow run about 10 yards and piled up. He weighed 200 lbs field dressed. On Monday and Tuesday that week I had a deer reduction hunt at an Indiana state park. I used the same gun and load to kill this nice 180 lbs 10 pointer. He popped out of a thicket about 150 yards away and I hit him threw both lungs. He mule kicked and ran about 20 yards into the thicket and crashed. To say I had a great 4 days of deer hunting is an understatement! 2 great bucks in 4 days is something I probably never achieve again. Mike

I was once considering buying a rifle in the caliber you describe, but could not afford it at the time. Money is still an issue, but things are improving. Would you mind listing what a rifle in .358 BFG costs? as I do not now recall the figures I saw a few years ago. BTW excellent deer, well done.
Thank you, Arthur.

Arthur, It depends on what action you use. I have just over $1300.00 in mine. Barrel is 380.00, dies 150.00, brass 1.75 ea. unless you make your own then around 40.00 for 50. donor gun any where from 400.00 - 600.00 and scope, bases and rings. If you decide to build one I can give you plenty of loads. Mike

Mike, you have done yourself and the rest of us proud. Great going and if you strain your arm patting yourself on the back it is understandable. Two great deer. Congratulations. Ben

Nice going Mike. That's some fine looking bucks.
Many people say "you can't eat the horns" I just tell them that putting meat on the walls attracts maggots. ;D
