As the State of Florida has made using a cap lock/side lock with round ball illegal for hunting turkey on public lands (WMA'S) , has anyone ever tried shooting shot in a rifle barrel? I was thinking of filling a .45 sabot with 4 shot and sealing with wax/paper and using as a shot gun. Any ideas out there? I have a T/C Seneca .45 that I have had for over 30 years and can't get to sight in for nothing. Gonna put it on the wall for looks. Was hoping that could use for turkeys with around 40 or less grains of Pyrodex with shot.

It's doable. In the civil war there are times where the soldiers would hammer mini balls flat and cut shot with a knife, wadded paper for wads and shoot birds with their .58 rifled muskets. Expect a less than acceptable pattern. You might get the barrel bored out to .54 or .58 or .62 smooth and that would make a better shotgun. The .58 is about 28 gauge and then you could use 28 gauge wads etc... You can always call Green Mountain and see if they have a smooth bore barrel to fit your lock/stock. You could probably use 410 wads in the .45. Good luck, 10 ga

Don't waste your time. Well, go ahead a play with it if you want to, as many of us already have. But a rifled barrel won't have any kind of a pattern beyond twenty feet no matter what you do with wads, sabots, shot cups, etc.

A lot of people take rifled barrels and have them reamed out to smooth bore. I am looking for a worn out junked out .54 cal renegade barrel to do just that. Have it bored out to .58 cal and make it a shotgun.

Your Seneca could probably be bored out to 48 cal or so. Probably small for Turkeys but would be fun for squirll or so.
Would you want to sell your Seneca to help offset buying a shotgun?

If you could find a 56 caliber renagade that might be the ticket. As you know they are smooth bore.

If you have a rifle slug gun barrel on a shotgun, take a few shots at 20 yds with and bird shot load. Then do it with a smooth bore at the same range and you will see the difference. With your smaller bore and less shot, this would be a waste of time if a big turkey is the goal. It would work probably for pest control inside 10 yds and that would be fun. 10 yd chipmunk with a smokey flintlock.
