Early this past August I got my .22 out to shoot a few rounds to make sure the zero was OK in case I got the urge to do any squirrell hunting. My almost 7 year old daughter Morgan was with me that week and I asked her if she wanted to do some shooting. Her eyes lit up and she said, "...do you mean shoot a real gun dad?" I said sure. I've got just the one for you. She asked if I meant the gun I deer hunt with. No honey.( she can barely carry my 45 cal Savage let alone shoot it.) I got her set up with an old Ithaca single shot .22 that my dad has had for years and been saving for such an occasion. The gun belonged to an old friend of my dads who had a shorter stock made to fit his grandson and it fit Morgan like a glove. She was shooting out the back of my dad's pole barn. Here are a couple of pics. I hadn't shot this gun in years so I shot a few times to make sure how the irons lined up at 20 yds and so she could see how loud it was. Five of these shots are mine. I got it set up on bags for her so all she would have to do is pull the gun to her shoulder and sqeeze. I let her dry fire it several times with an empty case in the chamber so she could get the feel of the trigger. Once she got the hang of how to line up the front bead and rear blade she hit the target every time. Grandpa and I were smiling ear to ear the whole time. It was great how she kept saying "Yeah..." when after every shot I asked if she wanted to shoot again.

Now that looks like a focused shooter with the intent of tagging the bulls-eye. Results seen on the target says that’s a shooter in the making. If the gene of the hunter is in her blood then it won’t be long before she’s in the field with family sharing the adventure. That will be another momentous occasion to look forward too.
Thanks for sharing this moment.

Man...you give a guy a title and see how he starts treating his friends ;D Yes Rick...she's growing up fast. She started 1st grade this year but is going on 13. Along with the bulk .22 rounds I'm, (sooner rather than later), going to have to get her a stick to fight off the little boys with. Thanks for all the kind comments guys. I try to introduce her to as many activities as possible and let her choose which ones she wants to continue with beyond that. The best part about this was seeing her enthusiasm grow with each shot.

No greater blessing can be bestowed to man than to him be born a daughter. They are precious. I have two. Ben

I am glad you are able to spend quality time with her.Mild loads and shooting sticks and a ground blind are right around the corner for her!

A very nice story indeed. I have a 6 year old grandaughter I need to form a tighter bond with..... And I am glad that you are teaching her how important eye safety is. Seeing those safety glasses is a good thing. Drop

Thx for sharing the story, and getting the kids into shooting, especially the young ladies. They are the future of our sport.

I don't have a lever gun for my 10 year old little girl. But I did get her shooting my Ruger Mark II and of course she loved it. Awesome experience, alittle sweeter than when I go shooting with my two sons (15 and 17 now). Little boys make daddies proud, little girls make daddies melt!
