I just got news that the company that was responsible for making my barrel for my new custom has changed ownership and has taken on government contracts which means I would have another 22 weeks of wait. I cancelled the order of course and am looking for another quality barrel manufacturer who can do a turnaround in 9 weeks or less.
Have any of you guys rebarreled your centerfires? Do you prefer single cut barrels to button rifling? Who do you trust to produce the most accurate and dependable barrels? If you were to order a custom barrel on your hunting rifle today who might you choose to make it? I know many of the muzzleloading guys like the Pac Nor. I am just trying to get other opinions before I place an order.

Sorry for your bad luck Doug. The Shilen on my .45 is a great shooter. The BR guys around here prefer either Kreiger, Hart or Shilen in that order from my conversations with them, all their BR guns as well as their hunting rifles shoot itty bitty groups, some better than others, but all shooters are not of equal talent so I can't say one is superior to the other.

Dave....thanks for the input. I know that Krieger has a 19+ week wait time on their barrels and Hart doesn't make any barrels with groove diameter greater than .35 Shilen doesn't do fluting but that isn't a big deal if they can deliver what I want in 9 weeks or less. Right now I am between Douglas, Pac Nor and Lilja because they all claim less than a 10 week turnaround after order. I will check with Shilen on Monday.
Any other suggestions?

I have a Douglas .50 for the Encore, a PacNor .45 for the l0MLII, and a .20 Shilen for another Encore. The PacNor is practically a tack driver and the Shilen can practically shoot through the eyeballs of a skeeter @ 100yds. The Douglas is good only with SST's.
Dunno about Douglas, but I believe both PacNor and Shilen make match grade barrels, which is probably what you want.

Kreiger or Shilen have been my picks for CF guns and this last sablotless ML, as far as cut or button rifled, I can't tell a difference.
Just curious, but who did you have lined up that backed out?

Kreiger or Shilen have been my picks for CF guns and this last sablotless ML, as far as cut or button rifled, I can't tell a difference. Just curious, but who did you have lined up that backed out? I had chosen to go with Earnie Stallman of Badger Barrels in Wisconsin because he seemed very knowledgable concerning muzzleloaders and because he was able to adhere to to the .373 SAAMI specs for the bore. I am not sure if he has retired to travel the world shooting in long range Black Powder matches. I know that was his passion. The company is under new management and is under extreme pressure to comply with agreements contracted with the government. At this point I am past screaming and yelling and just looking for a viable option at this late juncture. Nobody is going to mention Lilja? Doug

Doug, forgot, but take a look at these guys. I have a couple of 50cal barrels from them for a 50-90 conversion, they look pretty nice so far. www.mcgowenbarrel.com/pricing.htm

Wow.....things sure can change after just one phone call! Just got off the phone with Tom Post and he is having tremendous results with a new 6.5mm barrel and .257 caliber bullets from a muzzleloader. Sounds strange I know but this would be one cool caliber for varmits and deer if he truly develops loads that are consistently accurate. It should also be a very good long range target caliber but of course I am going to wait until he sends me some pictures of the targets.
I will keep you guys posted as I find out more.

.25 cal I would have to take my glasses with me hunting or I would never get the powder down the barrel. That is also one skinny ram rod how do they keep from bending it?

Well, another guy who can't see. I feel your pain. It will also contain a muzzle brake so that will make it twice the job to reload. Not sure about the ramrod. Actually that never crossed my mind. I don't have any answers at this point of course but I am hopeful that I will have my rifle within three months. Badger barrels really through me a curve. I should have stayed on them but sometimes all works out for the best. Will post as soon as I get my hands on my custom. Doug
