Well I got out today to shoot my new .40 cal Green Mountain .40 cal ICB percussion barrel today.
First off I do not no shoot groups. I shoot game. Never seen a game animal that held still to see if the groups would work so I am always about center hits.
First load out of the gate shot really sweet. Saltines crackers at 25 yards were getting pulverized left and right. Never a miss. Starting load was .389 .015 patch with 60 gr of FFG pyrodex. No miss fires either. Gotta love the early reports of this gun.Gonna stretch it out to .50 yards next session.
My question is from people that hunt with their .40 cal. Is .60 grain going to be enough for SE white tail hunting? I mostly brush hunt and most shots are well within 60 yards. Yes I know its all about shot placement and double lungs. The lightest load I have have ever used on big game was on a .45 cal and it was .60 grain of FFG pyrodex. I got decent penetration on a very large buck.Busted right through the shoulder and imbedded in the heart. I was able to pull the bullet and it looked in unshot condition's with no expansion.
Also what is the lightest load I could try for say squirrel hunting? I am thinking about backing it off to .40 grains.
Any suggestions would be great.

I shot a 28" long 40 cal GM barrel for years. 25g FFFg or Pyrodex P and 60g max for hunting. The length of your barrel will determine a lot. If it's near 40" you could get by with possibly 60g of 2F but a significantly shorter barrel will need 3F. Pyro P is extremely accurate but corrosive. See how Shokey 3F works. It is clean and non-corrosive. The little 0.395 ball is light(forgotten but possibly 68g). Heart lung only.fairly short range also: 50-60 yds max. Speed and energy really bleeds off fast.
