Today Herman had to go down to his hunt club so was a "no-show" at our Tuesday range session.............Just Bill and I. Bill got to shoot a new barrel I had just installed on his 6mmBRX. He was having high pressure problems with the old one and after much work, decided it had to be in the bore diameter of the barrel. After talking with the people at the barrel company they asked me to send it to them. After two weeks I got a call and they graciously indicated they could find "nothing wrong" but were going to send me a new barrel. So, Bill shot it and put together a .109" three shot group at 100 yards and two groups at 300 well under an inch. So he was in hog heaven.......AND, no pressure signs..........But I digress ;D
So, I decided to again visit the tan mmp sabot to see if I could get them to shoot better than the blue Harvester? I took a new load that I had put together and ran a side by side test. The load is 15/55....N-110/Re-7 and I was using the .40 cal. Hornady XTP which I pointed (decreased the diameter of the meplat) in my die.
The first group was with the Harvester....1.6" for five. The second was with the tan mmp..........3.1" for five shots. The third group I substituted the N-110 for 5744 and went back to the Harvester and five grouped 1.9". You will note the drop in velocity between using N-110 and 5744 as the booster. The velocities with the Harvesters and the MMP's was similar but they did not group as well. Deer good, just not target good I probably have a few hundred of them which I would give away just for the shipping??
The fourth group was a load that I had shot before and it came thru at 100 yards like clock work.
So now I use this same load to see how these .40 XTP's do at 300 yards...............The jury is out Vertically they were 2" but horizontally they went 11 inches?? Did not have the wind to move them that far apart. For whatever reason, they did not do well. At 200 they will shoot reasonably well. This duplex seems to work very well and gave low ES's for the three shots I captured. (forgot to turn the chrono on for shots 1 & 2).
All in all had a good day. Shot my .22 BR some and watched a black snake "slither" almost the entire width of our 200 yard berm. ;D
I know a lot of this information gets repetitive but hey, there is not much going on in the summer with the board.
OH, the reason I did not get any chronograph readings last week??? My dumb A _ _ had the two plugs in the wrong sockets (and I have them marked also : I took it home, plugged it in, shot the pellet rifle over it one time and got a perfect reading..........That's when I knew I screwed up!
