.45 cal. loads
Weather was nice today with the temperatures moving from the 40's into the mid 50's. Wind/breeze was about non-existent and the sky was overcast, which is great fro chronographing. All three of us, Herman, Bill and myself had a good day with loads that cooperated ;D I shot a new duplex and re-visited some old ones. In particular, I wanted to do a good comparison of the Harvester Blue Crush Rib vs. the plain Blue Harvester. I know dave d had indicated the CR did not work well for him and I wanted give it a valid test.
The new duplex is being used in targets 1, 2 and 3. I upped the starter charge by one grain to make it 18/56 - N-110/H-322. On target #1 I used the 200 gr. XTP along with the Blue "EZE Load" Harvester sabot. An average velocity of 2889 fps with an ES of 26 fps was obtained along with a 1.082" five shot group.
Next I shot the same load only I substituted the Harvester Blue Crush Rib sabot. This shot an average speed of 2865 with an ES of 15 fps and a five shot group of 1.922" Note: Both targets had fairly small three shot groups. If not for shot #5 on the second target, they both would be comparable. Was the fifth shot the fault of the sabot? OR possibly the shooter or the bullet construction? It may take doing this test a number of times with various loads to actually make a determination.
Now got to target #3 which is again the same charge only I switched back to the "regular blue sabot but replaced the XTP with the SST. The velocity went back to where it was on target #1, The group improved but..............I blew a sabot! Note shot #4's velocity dropped about 400 fps and the shot was not to be found on the target.
What I am seeing is that the velocity is lower with the CR vs. the plain Harvester sabot. The CR's also load with less pressure.
Moving out to 200 yards, I shot the load that gave me that pretty .6" five shot 100 yard group last week..................Can not explain shot #1, but 2,3, 4 and five were right at MOA. Shot it again, target #5 and managed a three shot group at 1.729", then one out and the fifth going back into the three shot group.
If you look at target #6, you will definitely see where 5744 powder as the booster produces about 200 fps LESS velocity than N-110. Accuracy was still pretty decent. When I first got on this forum, I had been led to believe that those two powders could be used about interchangeably??? NOT!!! N-110 is definitely hotter.
While I was using the Cool rod, it was not submersed in the ice water. There is a hole under the window frame where I am able to stick the rod outside. And, the fact that it was warmer today, the rod did not get as cool as I would have preferred. So, it is possible that the reason for the blown sabot was due to the barrel not being quite as Cool as I normally get it.
