Hi Guys:
It's been a while, but I also got lucky on the 29th of December. It was in the single digits and the wind was gusting at about 40 miles an hour. I do believe the wind chill was a -10 degrees in Gouldsboro PA. I'm lucky because I was hunting from my lake house that adjoins the state game lands. So every hour or so I came back in to warm up a bit.
I finally got this Old boy around 4:30 PM. Now get this, I knew he was a very old Buck. I have been watching him on and off for a long time. Actually I have this deer on video... are you ready for this.. the date is October 25, 2003. He has a distinctive hook on the left main beam and one brow tine on the right. I shot him quartering away from about 50 yards. He never heard me because of the wind. Used a 50 TC Hawken, Goex 4F in pan, 90 grains Goex 2F down the tube with TC Maxi Hunter 350 grain lubed bullets.
I had my taxi pull the lower jaw and match his teeth against the chart. He is off the chart, it stops at 6 to 7.5 years of age showing the wear of the teeth at different ages. His neck was only 12 inches around but his skin was 22 inches around... I don't know if he would of made it through the brutal Northern winter up there. I had two front teeth pulled and am sending them to the PA Game Commission, for about $20 bucks they do something to them and slice them up to get the exact age of the Buck.
Before anyone scoffs at this, I have seen lower jaws with teeth dating up to 12 years of age for a couple of Doe in the wild. They live allot longer still in captivity. Anyway, I thought you guys may find this interesting.
Two years ago I posted a pic here of a nine pointer I shot with the Flintlock, he dwarfed this Buck and scored 140 B&C. I guess it was on the old board.
