I just purchased a Remington SPS Stainless in 257 WBY MAG. Does anyone have in experience with this cartridge? I am planning to shoot Weatherby factory ammo and was wondering if anyone has tried any?
Thanks-Buddy

Weatherby didn't develop any junk so I am sure you will be fine. Years ago my brother had a .256 Newton that was a great cartridge. Not a Mag however.

I've sighted it in with 87gr Spire Points but, I feel it may be too light. I want to try the 80 gr Barnes TTSX so I won't have to worry about the bullets exploding.

Tarheel: You can really save a bunch of money if you reload versus factory ammo. The 25-06 AI (Ackley Improved) is "similar" and alot of guys like the 100 grain bullets.

Congratulations on the 257, I like all of the 25 caliber cartridges. I have friends with both the 257 roberts and the 25-06 and both are great performing cartridges.
I don't know what you are planning to use the 257 for but 85 grain bullets from a 243 work well on deer.
These are sierra bullets coming out of a 243 at an average of 3058fps from my rifle.
The sierra reloading manual lists the 257 weatherby as being capable of 3200 to 3700fps which should give plenty of range to get them to work the way you wish if you should decide to handload.

If you really want this cartridge to shine, you should consider the heavier bullets in the 110 to 120 weight class. The new Barnes 115 will handle any of North America's ungulates. It's right up there with the .264 Win Mag. Loading your own is definitely a plus.

25-06 ACKLEY eats 257 wbys lunch. you will do best with a 115 or 117 gr. bullet at those velocities, unless you decide on a 100 gr. TSX. My 25-06 (standard) can push those to 3400fps but lack of expansion could be an issue at over 3100 fps impact velocity.

I researched the 25.06 AI and the velocities are similar, if not less than, to Weatherby factory loads from what I could find on the net. But I feel you all are right, I believe I am going to go with either the 110 gr Accubond or the 120 gr Nosler Partition.
The factory 120 gr Nosler was chronographed at 3415 fps with a 26" barrel, plenty fast for me.
Thanks for the help!!! Buddy

What is the rate of twist on your new barrel?

I shot allot of rounds through the 25-06 and I do love that bullet size. Always would of loved to had a weatherby round. I reload and the thing is that it does well on both ends. The 87 grain bergers for yotes and 115 noslers or bergers shoot well too. The long boat tail of the bergers are kinda finicky about finding the seating depth they like. Yup your probably going to want to reload with the cost of those babies. Great round, I am jealous!
That weatherby factory ammo is top shelf. I have a buddy with the 300 wthby and it shoots lights out with the factory wthby shells.

I believe it is a 1 in 10 twist, but I'll check. I read that some of the earlier barrel twists wouldn't stablize a bullet heavier than 100 gr.

I shoot a 25-06 with 100 gr. bullets some of the time. With that Weatherby you won't have to worry about range unless you start to get pretty far out. My 25-06 gets 3445fps with the Nosler 100 grain bullets. I've not been faced with a short shot so far but I just purchased some of the 110 Accubonds to work up with just that eventuality in mind. That Weatherby should just be a little more of a good thing.....talk about flat shooting.

I believe it is a 1 in 10 twist, but I'll check. I read that some of the earlier barrel twists wouldn't stablize a bullet heavier than 100 gr. that twist should easily stablize 120 grain projectiles. Might have a difficult time with 130

I have a Rem Classic 25-06 that shoots the Hornady 75gr V Max very well(3800fps) w/RL19 as well as the Nosler Accubond 110gr @ 3200fps w/RL 22. Depending on how much your going shoot that Weatherby ammo could get very pricey. If your a reloader I would get the dies & go for it.
