Well a good friend of mine has decided since he hunts on a Mil reservation that only allows slugs or MLs he would like to try a single shot slug gun. He has found a standard H&R with lightweight 24" barrel. He wanted opinions about other choices. My suggestion was a MLII but he won't take that route. My real suggestion is a 20ga Ultra slug hunter but would like to hear from others. If it were your money and you have 400 bones(already has scope) what would you buy?

I would visit the gun shops and gun shows and look for a Rem 1100 or 870 that's about 30 years old. Back then, these guns were made so well and they used very nice wood and finishes.
That's what I would do.

20 ga ultra slug by h&r. very accurate guns for the money. mike Agreed. I used a 12ga but for the money they are hard to beat for accuracy.

I second jims. Or a Savage 210 if you want a 12 ga. Nothing better that a single purpose weapon if you're serious about deer. Check out Randy Wakeman's site. He shakes out the Savage 220. Great report.

I agree with all the suggested guns but can any of them really be had for less than $400? aside from the single shot of course. Last I checked the 210 was around 650 and the new 220 is about 550 give or take and really not sure about a 1100. I am pretty sure that is his main consideration as the gun he is looking at right now is less than $200. If he does buy I bet I can pass on to you guys where you can pick up a H&R 12ga slug cheap cause I know he won't like it for long.

go for the h and r ultra slug hunter i have the 12 gauge and 20 gauge youth for my daughter when she is not hunting i use hers it is so much lighter than the 12 gauge. these guns group better than some rifles deadly at 100 yards. with the money you save on the gun put the extra into a nice scope. we pile the deer up with these guns in mass. good luck BILL

H&R 20 ga!! Had a SS Encore Pro hunter 20 rifled-gone. Had Blue Encore 20 rifled-gone. 12 ga 870 wingmaster with Hastings 1/35 cantilevered bbl. Still have it and it's good to 125-150 and excellent for brush as the 5 shots are nice. It now sports my ainpoint and is really nice for quick shooting. For "stand" hunting and those long shots I use the Savage ML II. Most of the other guys have H&R 20 gauge rifled with 3X9 scopes. They are shooters but the ammo that shoots good is $20+ per box of 5. That's $4 per shot- OUCH! Mostly they shoot Winchester Platinum or Gold, Hornady, or Remington Solid coppers. Still don't equal the Savage. $.02 Best, 10 ga

Some of the best slug gun ammo out there is the Light-Field Hybreds and they are not $4 a pop either. They are exceedling accurate in the ultra slug guns.

Tasaman: You really ought to talk to him more about the MLII. I have a TarHunt and Marlin 512 with a worked on trigger. They shoot well but they cannot compare to a smokeless Sav. I got my last two, if considering guns only, used, for under $350 apiece, so it would be in his price range. I took a deer recently on a difficult shot at 153 yards that I would not have attempted with the Marlin. My Sav's are stand guns. If I was hunting on the ground or still hunting the shotguns probably would be carried.

Before I offer you my advice on which slug gun to buy I would like to first give you a description of my experience based on shooting slug guns for over 24 years so you can rest assured it is worth your time reading it. I own and shoot on a regular basis the fallowing 12ga slug guns:
Bolt action Marlin 512 Slug master with a Varix-II 2-7x33mm Bolt action Browning A-Bolt Slug gun with a 3-9x40mm VariX-II NEF Pardner Tracker II slug gun with a VariX-II 3-9x40mm. Remington 870 smooth bore with iron sights Sadly both the Marlin 512 and A-Bolt went out of production over 5 years ago.
Between these four 12ga slug guns I have shot well over 2500 rounds of both sabot and Foster slug ammo. I must stress I have never shot Foster type ammo out of my fully rifled slug guns, sabot ammo only.
I am some what embarrassed to, but I have to admit that my $237 Marlin 512 shoots every bit as accurately as my almost $600 A-Bolt.
If I were going to buy a slug gun tomorrow with a budget of $500 or less and accuracy was my most important consideration with quality and ammunition availability in a tie for a close second, I feel you only have two choices.
#1-chose between either the Savage 210 12ga bolt action slug gun or; #1b-The Savage 220 20ga bolt action slug gun #2-The New England Firearms Tracker II single shot in either 12ga or 20ga. The same exact slug guns are also sold as the H&R 920 also in 12 & 20ga.
It is a widely held opinion with slug gun experts like Mr. Dave Henderson that FOR THE MONEY you can not get a better performing more accurate slug gun than the single shot NEF Tracker II AKA the H&R 920. It can be had for under $250, less if you can get one on sale.
Granted there are other slug guns you can buy, but most likely none will equal the Savage or NEF guns in terms of accuracy and most other slug guns will cost more. A 870 or 1100 with a cantilever scope mount is IMHO simply to expensive and the Savage and NEF/H&R guns will most likely out shoot it or at least shoot as well and are all cheaper.
I have shot at least 85% of the saboted shotgun ammo out there made by Remington, Winchester, Federal, and Lightfield. And after just recently shooting sabot slugs from all the above listed makers the best all around performer in terms of CONSISTENT ACCURACY was hands down the Federal/Barnes 12ga 2.75" that fires a .50 caliber, 3/4oz ( 437.5grns) tipped all copper Barnes EX ML bullet.
This sabot slug shot out of all three of my fully rifles slug guns averaged 1.5-1.75" for a 3-shot 100yrd group. At 200yrds I had around 7-7.5" of drop and 3.5-4" groups. What I liked most about this Fed/Barnes load was its consistency. Every single 3-shot group I shot with it formed nice triangular groups time after time. The POI out of my Marlin 512 was so consistently similar I could place 3 or 4 saved targets one on top of the other and see through the holes, they lined up that well.
If accuracy is not your top consideration, or if your friend does not wish to spend the money on pricey sabot ammo, then buying a new or used but in great condition 870 or 1100 should serve him well for years but I doubt you will find a used 1100 in VG condition for $400 or less.

I know that a lot of people like the single shot ultra slug hunters but the ones I have handled (never shot, just handled) felt poorly balanced and not like something I would want to carry.
I have a marlin 512 that I am getting ready to mount a scope on and see how it shoots, with open sights I have shot 4" groups with it. I have not had any trigger work done yet, but that is coming.
Do you know what kind of accuracy does he expects? Or the range he expects to be shooting at? I get 4" groups at 100 yards with a scoped mossberg 500 12ga and a rifled barrel. At fifty yards with a smooth bore, vent rib barrel on my 20ga beretta A390 I can get 3 slugs to touch on a good day.
If it was my money I would look for either a rem 870 or mossberg 20 gauge with a rifled cantilever barrel.

HR Ultra is hard to beat if you don't mind a single shot and a heavy gun, but mine shoots excellent. I'll change the pace from everyone else and give my 2 cents, I would shop hard for a used Ithaca Deer Slayer II if I had to have one gun, but I am very partial to ithaca's, if I couldn't find one I'd look for a used savage 210 or 220 or even the Marlin. Good luck

The hands down best choice for the money right now is the Savage 220F !
Now I would add the 210F but Savage saw fit to stop production of that gun this year !
Thankfully I already had a 210F or I would be scrounging looking for one !
Anyway the 220F is cost efficient and shoots really well ! I got mine at dealer cost this time but I am sure most dealers would sell you one for about $425 !
Look no further then the Remington 2 3/4" AccuTip and the Hornady 2 3/4" SST for the 220F !
The same is good in my 210F plus the Winchester XP3 2 3/4" 12 gauge !

Oh yeah the old Remington 1100 and 870's with smooth slug barrels aren't bad out to 75 yards either ! Early fall of 2009 I bought a kinda beat up 1100 from the early 70's with a slug barrel . Reblued the whole thing and fitted a KickEez pad . that one with the elcheapo Winchester 1 ounce slugs will keep 5 in 2" at 50 yards with open sights ! Also bought a 870 from the 60's at the same time and got a old smotth slug barrel to shoot on it . This one didn't shoot quite as well for me but still kept 5 in 3" at 50 yards . I had about $275 in the 870 and about $235 in the 1100 when I was done with them . I have since traded of the 870 but the 1100 will "probably" hang around here for awhile ! Almost forgot ! Got a pair of Ithaca MAg-10's right before Xmas and a Browning BPS all in 10 gauge ! All three of these do well with Federal 00 Buck and Federal rifled slugs out to 50 yards ! The three of these cost me anywhere from $450 to $550 . Over the years I have accumulated quite a collection of shotguns expressly for buck and slugs ! Normally that wouldn't be a big deal for hunters in some areas , but I only hunt areas requiring shotgun slugs or buck 1-5 days a year

12 ga. HR Ultra slug- thumb hole stock All of the guns are good choices-money wise the HR is less expensive. I have used most of the slugs on the market SST's and Lightfields group very good and reloaded/handloaded Lyman type slugs(shaped like the airgun pellet ). these are good out to 75-80 yards. Now I handload 300 gr. xtps. in ccs sabots-fold crimp on a cheap Lee load-all. members.fortunecity.com/emmyoung/id10.htmthese slugs get 1.5-2" groups at 100 yds-3" groups at 150 and 4-5" groups at 200 yds.(all shots in kill zone of life size deer target) this particular load is soft shooting and travels at 1450 fps. Main point is this gun will shoot/group just about anything you feed it and at a great price. good luck with your choice
