If it is is a blown up Savage go to Toby's website ( high Peformance Muzzle Loading) he has the story and also there is a sub board here about Savage safety issues and his stories about blowing up the Savage 10
Couldnt open your link

Hey Guys,
Yes, I see that the server went down. It was running fine when I posted.
I have seen and read all of the articles that regularly float around on this topic. This set off pictures was unquestionably one I had not seen before and unless someone put them together with nefarious intentions they are the most shocking I have seen to date. (Meaning shocking in the sense the average person who sees them would jump to a lot of conclusion regardless of what the real story is.)
The link contained a slide show of about 20 pictures. The first ten or so are of Savage with a blown barrel. The second 10 are of a gentlman in the hospital with about half his hand blown off and are extremely graphic.
Perhaps these are old photos's and someone already knows the story....perhaps they are new photo's and someone knows the story. In either case, the photos were being spread, and without the story I am sure a lot of people will jump to a lot of conclusions...so I figured I would ask if anyone could provide some light on the issue.

From the description on TBs website this appears to be pictures of the Canadian incident. I do not think TB will be showing these pics on his website because it is clearly a pressure burst centered in the vicinity of the rear sight and people would start questioning his breechplug theory. Of course TB doesn't give any evidence as what loads was being used except that the Canadian guy said it was a book load (is that the same part of the man brain that answers when a cop asks you how fast you were going when you had an accident or when you get pulled over for speeding). The thing that gets me with the Canadian and TN incidents both guns had less then 100 rounds thru them so I wonder about the experience level of the shooters. Even with TBs incident he admitted to shooting the breeze with his buddies just before his blow-up.
The main thing it shows what could happen if you do not follow safety procedures and that is something everyone who shoots should be reminded of. It easy to get lax.

While I don't want to try to prove it, I have grave doubts that even a double book load would do that. Here has to be more to the story. In Toby's case he had 7500 shoots fired. This gent had 100? ??

I guess that is why i dont care for these stories much. Too much speculation. we dont know how truthful the owner was about what he did, the whole storie behind it, and i didnt see him load the gun so i dont know if he double charged or if the bullet slid down the barrel over time and came off the charge creating 2 problems. 1 being creating an obstuction like situation in the barrel and 2 having too much air space arouond the charge creating more of an "explosion" and not a burn. there is just not enough info to to truly say what happened. I feel bad for the man for his injuries. all we can do is look at this and say " is my saftey process at the range and hunting in place so this likely wont happen to me". SAFTEY FIRST!

I wonder If the shooter had a misfire and did not check to see if the bullet was still seated on the powder.
There have been times when I have loaded to loose of bullet sabot combination or too light bullet weight and the bullet/sabot only moved part way down the barrel.
ALWAYS check to make sure the sabot/bullet is seated against the powder!

My speculation: Careless loading, Improper loading and inattention to details often result in serious problems. We don't know what caused the blow up. Chances are the shooter doesn't know. Whatever the cause it should say to the wise...Be sure of what you are doing and do it in a safe manner.
