Available to the hunter are a variety of actions. Most of us have shot lever actions, slide action (pumps), Semi-automatic and single shot breakdowns. For a variety of reasons most went to the bolt action rifles for deer. For awhile I wanted a bolt action for everything including the shotgun because in the heat of a hunting situation I wanted to always know that reloading meant the same movements. Also there were few mal-functions with the bolt. Is anyone out there using deer rifles other than bolt actions? I know some are but would like to hear your reasons. Ozark PS: Don't read between lines and construe that I have objections to any persons choice.

I have a model 99 Savage and a Model 94 Winchester. I had a Browning BLR '81. I guess I like the lever actions. The Rifleman was a favorite program growing up. Perhaps that is why I like them. I am usually carrying a bolt gun deer hunting, but did carry the 99 this year. I like the levers bear hunting.

Remington 740 semi auto. I have never had a problem working any type of action when in a hurry whether it be pump, bolt, single shot, lever, or semiauto. That being said I am using the semiauto now because there is no sound of the action being worked on a quick second shot also it has mild recoil and this one will shoot 1 inch at 100 yards with factory ammo.

youp50, In my years of gunsmithing I learned to completely disassemble the Model 99. There is a trick to doing that but I have had several brought to me in a box for assembly. It requires the use of a slave pin. Ozark

Rem 7600 pump carbine, available in 30-06 or .35 Rem. only (meaning the carbine, 18 1/2" barrrel). Easy to carry for still-hunting or tracking, quick handling, points steady, extremely deadly. For stand hunting, or sitting near a field, its the bolt, because for long distance, big caliber shooting, they are considered to be the most reliable, and I just like them.

Whyo,
Your post reminded me of a long departed mentor. Arnie called his .44 a 'squirrel gun'. First time I heard that I had to ask why. He replied that when he sat down for lunch or a rest he had to cover the barrel with a hanky to keep the squirrels from moving in.
