Can we believe what we read? According to recent DNA here is how the Mule deer, the whitetail and the Columbia Blacktail have come about. Ages ago the blacktail bucks chased off the whitetail bucks and bred with the whitetail does. This cross supposedly created the Mule deer. To me since the Mule deer is much larger than either it doesn't add up. I do know that the antlers of the blacktail resembles the Mule deer in that the tines tend to fork. According to my reading some crossbreeding is still happening as the whitetail and blacktail meets after these centuries. The blacktail does bounce or bound like the Mule in flight. Regardless of how it all came about, the deer is widely distributed. I seen deer in Panama, in korea and in many US states. Some also in Germany but they were more like our elk. Are you a deer hunter? Which group is your favorite? Ozark

Here we have both. Cross breeding does happen but not that often. The rut seems to be a slightly different time. Ofspring some times resemble mulies and sometime white tail. I don't have a favorite, I just hunt what's in season and what tags I have.

Only whitetails here. Therefore my favorite deer to hunt is the Mule deer in the Colorado mountains. Folllowed closely by the Pacific Northwest Blacktail.

I love the jungles and jungle like terrain so I think my favorite would be the blacktail. I sure enjoyed hunting them for the few years I was Stationed at Fort Lewis, Wa. I would get in there amongst them and had better luck than most hunters.
