the other day i received a cataloge from cabelas and it had a savage mod. 10 bp listed. the discription had no mention of smokeless powder capabilities, it appears to be a savage mod. ml 11 in the picture. i called savage to see if it was the same as the mod.11. they told me it was for bp and bp subs. i asked if they had changed the design of the rifle? they said it was made on contract with cabelas. i wouldn't think savage would change the design. i would tend to think it is a marketing ploy so cabelas can sell the high priced sub situte bp powder with this rifle. if i am wrong this could lead to a dangerous situation!

Litle bill savage I hope is not stupid I would not worry to much about it. But I would enjoy the longer barrel.

This has been discussed here already. As I recall, it's the same gun as the regular 10ML, just a longer barrel, better recoil pad, etc.

They made this model because cabelas refuses to sell a muzzle loader that says made for smokeless powder. Same gun with a few minor differences. Just marked black powder or subs only to satisfy cabelas.

So does anyone know if this gun actually is safe for smokeless or is it a BP only? Is it the same as a normal Savage and just marked BPO for Cabela's lawyer's sake, or is it made differently so that it would be unsafe for smokeless?

IMO if something were to go wrong with the smokeless powder, they'd simply tell you, Hey man it says blackpowder only! If you want to shoot smokeless, stick with the one that says it can use it.

I'm sure Savage didn't piss away R & D dollars making the gun weaker so that you couldn't use smokeless, but If it's marked BP only, you procede at your own risk.

By my understanding (and I'm sure I'm correct) both the savage and the cabelas model take the same breech plug. The strengh for smokless comes from the amount of threads and the depth of threads on the plug. You make the call but I know that I wouldn't worry about it. I do agree that if something did happen they would do the "it says no smokless powder" line to clear themselves of responsibility

I have looked at Cabelas and have seen no Savage ML rifles.

You are too late Cheese. Savage stopped making the MLII and the Cabelas model.

I have one. Just considering getting another, but not anymore. I think it would be hard to wear one out.

Sorry, I misspoke. I did mean I have a Savage MLII, not a cabelas version.
