I don't put this "stuff" to bore anyone, just to show what various loads do. I am fortunate to have an excellent place to shoot along with good equipment and two friends (Herman and Bill) to share experiences. So here is todays report......
First off let me say, that the Lead Sled along with the new base I made, the springy, 16 lbs. of lead and grease on the front rubber feet are working out EXCELLENT! The rifle recoils, and immediately slides back to its stop. It puts the sights pretty close to right on the target. (pictures and description in the equipment section)
Also, Last week I got a new Pact Chronograph but did not have it set up the way I wanted so I had some minor problems. I will do a little blog with pictures in the equipment section when I get a chance, but never the less, it is working perfectly. I did not miss one shot (fired 31) today even when the sun came out.
(Just put it in the equipment section)
The first four groups were shot with a different duplex. I decided up up the starter charge and reduce the main charge. The intent was directed at sabotless loads to get the pressure up quickly. I think I will increase the starter another grain next week. But it is working. The charge is 16/54____N-110/N-130.
Group one (100 yds) with the 200 gr. FTX threw the fifth shot out to spoil a sub 1" five shot group.
Group two was the same load at 300 yards, I used my second stadia line (Leupold 6.5 x 20 with varmint hunter reticle) and managed five shots in 3.764" (3 in 3.066)
Group three also at 300 yards utilized the 195 Barnes with blue Harvester sabot. (note the almost 100 fps increase from sabotless?) Five shots in 4.335" with three (in a row) in 1.313"
Group four again at 300 yards was shot with the 200 gr. SST producing five shots in 4.115" with four (in a row) in 2.866"
Group five was with a different duplex (14/56___5744/H-322) and a 200 gr. XTP with BH sabot. I started out shooting it at 300 yards and a lower bullseye but could not find the shot? Velocity OK, see remaining shot velocities. Since I could not find the shot, I went to my 100 yard target and proceeded to put five more shots in 1.6". Upon scanning the 300 yd. target, Bill noticed a funny large hole on my upper right target. At first we thought it might be a bug, so Bill "plugged it" with his .223 and it did not disappear. There was also another unexplained tear. When we pulled the targets, we thought just maybe, the sabot and bullet may have caused it. Closer examination of the target at home showed a number of tiny (as is grains of sand/dirt) perforating the area around the target. We have a small berm in front of our targets to protect the steel frame holders. I suspect that shot went low and hit the berm causing a ricochet and fragments of either the bullet or rocks?
Target six was the same charge as above only shot with a 230 XTP sabotless at 100 yards....?Two and one!
And lastly, the same charge as above e only with the 200 gr. SST for a nice .524" group.
Hope the information is of some help!
