Going to New Mexico next year for elk and would like to start working on a load for my CVA Apex .50 muzzleloader. All of my muzzleloader experience to date has been with my converted 45-70 barrel shooting smokeless for deer in NY. Looking for suggestions on loads as I’m new to black powder.
Thinking I’m going to get one of Hankins CVA Apex ML DIS Replacement Plug and through some research it looks like blackhorn 209 would be the best powder choice? Was considering trying the Fury .50 320 gr bullets but maybe a .45 in a sabot would be a better choice? Anyone have any input on powder, charge weight, bullet and possibly sabot if needed?

Why not use the 45 with bh209? Can do that as well if it’s a better option. Powder charge and bullet suggestions for that too?
