I have decided to go sabotless with a smooth die. The gun is a savage 10ml II with .45 Pac-Nor with savage plug and ventliner. I plan to try Barnes 290 TEZ as a first effort because the barnes bullets have done well on deer in the past. Where do you all get your veggie wads? Do you all use Walters or are there other brands that are better?
Also, Is there a single powder type/weight load that works well for this combo?
Thanks, Bill

Why? My 4 45 PacNor barrels all have 209 ignitions with ventliners. I’m not comfortable with the pressures, stress on the scope, on me, and don’t feel I need the advantages of sabotless for deer hunting, except with the 40. A 290 TEZ may be a bit difficult to use . There are a lot of experienced 45 sabotless shooters on this board. I’d start a thread stating just what you have and your plans and get feedback. On my longer range 45, I’m shooting Pittman 225 AccuMax in a HLBS , wool wad, and a duplex load 7 VV110/53H4198. The BC of 0.315 will make up for the modest velocity of 2575. In another 45 , 37g VV110/195 Barnes. 165 CEB/Harvester/37g VV110 in HandiRifle. 200SSTs and a duplex in my 40. The 45 PacNor with a conventional BP/ventliner isn’t in May people’s opinion a serious heavy weight sabotless gun. Now a 250g SW or BE might be another story. Consider a 240 CEB saboted. Good BC and all CU. Well Bill, I guess you did just start such a thread . You’ll get good guidance.

Steve, unless you already have a life time supply of vent liners, the bushing plug will save $$ over time and without the worry of checking vents for wear. With your loads one could probably get into the thousands of shots before the need of replacing the bushing. My PN 700ml did not get an accuracy or speed change with the same loads after replacing the vent plug with a bushing plug.

Thanks to all that replied.8 years ago, I modified the rifle (stainless, laminated stock) using info from this forum, third pillar, Devcon steel bedding, Pac-Nor DD special. Using loads learned here (58 grains H4198 and a Barnes 195 with light blue sabot, CCI magnum 209). It has been set it and forget it. It is evident that I need to do some more research! Thanks, Bill

Danno, I’m sending my BPs to Richard for conversions just after I’m tagged out. 1 deer to go. Might be tagged out before our 2 weekend “gun” season , the 2nd and 3rd weekends of Nov. I’m hunting 3 different deer. Killed a deer at last light, very last light! , with my xbow , 50 yards, yesterday evening. The very tall rack was mistaken by me as one of those 3 bucks. It wasn’t!☹️. 2 buck limit.

Impressive bodied buck. Any estimate for weight? The tall rack is very regal, I would have shot him.

Bill, Thank you. There are 3 out there that make this one look puny. I’m not a good estimator of weight. However, the same sized deer get heavier every year. Maybe 200#. It was a big, young deer. Should be good to eat.

Thanks, Bill I think that’s a good load. So is 10/50 of 5744 or 4759 or VV110 under 50g H4198 which will get close the 2700’/sec. I just prefer the VV110 37g load. It’s not necessarily better.
