Looking for best bullet to use for low recoil in my scout conversion for my son to shoot. I am planning on using the Slufoot load of 17gr bluedot and light blue harvester sabot with the 195gr Barnes expander. Just wondering if that bullet will perform well at low velocities. I have also considered the Barnes .451 xpb 275gr (has the large hollow point and fits the scout without sizing). Which bullet do you think would be best? I also have 200gr xtp and sst. I’m just partial to Barnes. I have shot them all and they all shoot really good so accuracy is not an issue. Thanks

Pretty sure all the 45cal 275gr XPBs have a tiny HP www.barnesbullets.com/bullets/xpb/For light recoil youth loads why not use the 200gr or 225gr XPB made for 45LC? Ive shot the 460S&W 275gr XPB and it likes speed to open reliably.

Your right. The 451 large hp bullets I have are 250gr. made for the 454 casull Thanks

Nothing wrong at all with the 250gr. It will whackem good too but if low recoil is the goal, the 225gr XPB is excellent. That is my favorite bullet in my NULA with N110. Around 30gr of N110 and the 200gr or 225gr XPB should be next to nothing in recoil and temp stable.

You could also try the Barnes TAC-XP 45 ACP 185gr. I have shot it in CVA Optima with BH209 with very good results!

So do you think the 195 expanders would not work well in this situation? Main reason I ask is because I have several on hand already Thanks

My 7 yr old just shot a doe with 16gr of 4756 and a 200gr xtp 40 cal in a 40x50 harvester in an original savage 50cal. Range was about 15 yards broke both front shoulders full pass through and quarter size exit. I shot that combo through a line of 3 milk jugs filled with water and didn't recover the bullet.

A very low recoil load would be the 165 CEB (all copper) with 17-18g Blue Dot or 30-31g VV110 or 4759 or 5744. I anneal my CEB bullets. Propane torch until glowing dark red, drop in cold water.

He’s eleven so he can take a fair amount of recoil (he’s fine with 20ga turkey load), I just wanted to keep it as minimal as possible. He should be fine with the 250gr if the 195s won’t work. Would there be an advantage for me to anneal these bullets?

I would use 200xtp. That’s what did for my sister with a 5744 load. Nice mushroom.

Advantages of annealing: 1) quicker, likely better obturation resulting in greater velocity and likely better accuracy, and 2) better expansion, greater shock but still getting passthrus.

We critisized XTP and SST for blowing up when pushed hard and fast. I think they will be a perfect candidate for the speed he will shoot them. My pick -XTP. I'm also cheap.

According to Barnes tech support the 195 will perform down to 1100fps. I believe I’ll be getting 1700 to 1800 muzzle velocity. Does anyone know about what it would be at 100yds and maybe a little beyond. 100 would probably be as far as he shoots anyway.

Just an update. I decided to use the 195 Barnes and 18gr blue dot. He shot a nice little 10 pointer this morning at about 125 yards. Broadside shot straight through the vitals and deer only went about 20 yards and piled up. I’m pretty happy with the way the bullet performed.

I can imagine your sons smile from ear to ear when the deer piled up. He was bringing meat home. Ed

Congratulations. The 195B is virtually a magical bullet.
