Hey everybody, I picked up a Savage 10MLI, you know the one that takes the modules. Anyway, I do believe the breech plug has been in the gun since it left the factory. It is seized. Currently, have it soaking in Kroil. I am looking to beg, borrow, buy, or steal a factory breech plug tool and at least one ignition module if anybody can steer me in the right direction I would appreciate it! Thanks, Rman

I also have a Savage ML10I with a stuck breech plug. I soaked it in PB Blaster for a month then used an impact wrench with a tool made by a friend. No luck. I then sent it to Dennisinva, who by the way makes the modules, and he was unable to remove it. His number is 1-540-819-5874

mine was stuck that bad on ML2. Gunsmith had to drill it out. Maybe heat it with a propane torch? I'd remove it from action first, though.

Well giving God the glory I was able to get the breechplug out after several attempts. Soaked it in Kroil and PB blaster for 5 days. Took a 10 in 1/2 drive extension ( 11/16 OD) and cut off one end. Machined a solid tab across the front end that matched the slots on the plug. Applied a heat gun to the barrel as long as I dared. Then used an impact wrench at slowest speed and she broke loose. The plug and barrel are in great shape and the vent liner is good too. Thanks for all the help guys.

was it a rust or just carbon?

Carbon and the fact that it had been in the gun more then 10 years since it was out last.

Great you got it out! I would put in a new breech plug with the 3/8 and tape it with white pipe tape. That way it can not rust tight again.

Well if you can find a source for a new breech plug that fits the old 10ML- module guns that would be nice. 10MLII plugs are available from Arrowhead, but I can find no source at all for 10ML plugs, modules, or vent liners as they are completely different then the 10mlII.

Dennisinva took the measurements from mine and has an original. He would most likely be able to make a new one

The Savage MLI was only about a 1 year run. The ATF did not like that the ML could be converted to a centerfire so it forced Savage to go to the MLII as I understand. With so few MLIs out there parts could be hard to find and less incentive for someone to duplicate parts as the market would be very small or the price of the same perhaps relatively large IMO.

I recall one shot one kill commentinting on changing the ml-10 over to the ml-2 by changing the bolt head and breech plug.

A wooden rod or an arrow down the barrel and marked at end of barrel. Lay it alongside barrel with mark at end of barrel and it should be apparent if there is a column of powder, sabot and projectile in the barrel.

Lay it alongside barrel with mark at end of barrel and it should be apparent if there is a column of powder, sabot and projectile in the barrel. That method works as well...I always marked my rods and could tell at a glance..

Ok I've measured it using the method of a different ramrod I've got a breech plug so I know its length and determined it's not loaded.Ive soaked it for a week in break free and still won't budge.Im afraid I'm going to b reak the small nipples on the new breech plug remover.

Apply some heat.

I’ve never dealt with a stuck BP but if I was going to try penetrating oil, I would apply the oil to both sides of the BP. First muzzle down and put oil around the BP with a slight reservoir. After 4-5 days I would clean any remaining oil. Secondly. I would plug the primer hole and place the barrel muzzle up. Then again add penetrating oil so that there is a reservoir of oil around the BP and mating surface. Then give it another 4-5 days.
IMO just trying penetrating oil to one side of the BP is insufficient to work through the thread length. As for concern about the nipples on your BP tool, if the tool is properly and fully inserted to the BP it would take a lot of pressure to shear those nipples. When I install and remove my BP, I use a rubber mallet to tighten and loosen it with say a medium whack. While doing this I keep forward pressure on my BP tool to insure it is fully seated to the BP.
If the BP still doesn’t budge then applying a limited amount of heat as Lakeplainshunter suggested might break the hold of BP to barrel.
Good Luck with your endeavor.
