I opened a new carton of Federal 209A primers. I measured several that were under .295”? Probably (35) out of (100) were Short & I put those in boxes marked Shotshells Only & marked the other boxes 296”+. With an average crush fit of .003” in my ASG 209 Breech plugs is this necessary for Plug life longevity or am I totally anal & ridiculous.

Makes sense to me. Can’t prove it but I was thinking about getting a new 209 plug and this was going to be my plan.

The less a plug leaks the less erosion occurs.

Anal and ridiculous have produced some great groups for me . Weighing bullets is one of my excesses . Chris

Fed 209A primers vary in length .002-.003 and are not round. Maybe .001-.002 out of round. They were made to press in and are made of a light cup. I even made a die to make them consistent but the spring back came into play and didn't work all that well. It was some better but not great. I like to use them as it is handier for me but is something you will always deal with. I'm not familiar with other shotgun primers, they may be better.

Winchesters are nice and round, but not as hot and prone to misfire in cold weather.
