Hey everyone! New to the custom world of muzzle loaders. Have had a stock savage 10 II for about 10 plus years. Mostly just sighted in and hunted with it. Just bought a rem700 with a 45 cal brux barrel. All parts from arrowhead. A different guy owned it for about a year then sold it to me. Thinking of starting out shooting .40 cal 200 sst with some H 4198. Not sure what sabots yet. Anyways looks like lots of good reading on here.

Welcome... When I shot sabots in my 45's I used Harvester Blue Crushed Rib sabot with 60-62 gns H4198...This combo worked well with the 200gn SST or the 195gn Barnes Expanders...Good luck with your new gun. Zen

Congrats on the rifle, any pics?
My Rem 700ML with a Brux barrel shot sabots ok but not stellar like my McGowen barrel did. I used Harvester blue sabots, you could try the sabots that come with the 200 gr SST but those produced keyholes for me.

I've owned a few Brux 45's and none of them shot sabots as well as the couple of Pac-nor's did...I think it is because the Brux has 6 lands and the Pac-Nor has 8... Your Brux is an excellent sabotless shooter...might want to go that route...

I do plan on getting to shooting sabot less but just don't feel like I know enough about it yet. I also don't have a sizing die yet. When shooting sabot less do you ever have to worry about bullet movement once in the barrel while hunting ect?

I guess you would just size it to fit tighter if worried about movement while hunting.

When shooting sabot less do you ever have to worry about bullet movement once in the barrel while hunting ect? No worry about bullet slipping...Size them to a snug fit and your good to go...You won't have any problem getting up to speed when sizing...The benefits of going sabotless are well worth it...first step is getting a swinglock adjustable smoothform die... another good thing is that there are lots of 45 cal bullets to choose from making way for a lot more different combinations of powders etc....there are plenty of us who would be willing to help you get started in the right direction if you go that route...Good luck

Something to consider when shooting sabots: with smokeless, your barrel needs to cool down between shots. A second shot may not hurt accuracy, but from there on, the heat in the barrel will soften the sabots and accuracy will suffer.

if you shoot the 195 barnes they mat need to be knurled. they had to in my 45 brux. it helped with an ocassional 6 to 12 in flyer.. i knurled my 195 barnes. to .401. i didnt have to knurl the sst. i also used harvestor light blue sabot. here indiana you need a .357 or larger for muzzloader. just make sure you are leagal with a .40 bullet

one bullet type you all may be interested in is a paperpatched lead bullet. they go down the barrel easy are very accurate and dont mind a warm or hot barrel. a lot easier to shoot than sabots.
