I have been searching the threads for "light loads/low recoil loads". Since most of my shots are <150yards. I got some Barnes 40 cal. 155gr., Barnes 40 cal. 195gr. and Hornady 180gr. XTP bullets that I'm going to try. I was going to try 17 - 18gr. of Blue Dot (Slufoot's load, kinda). I was wanting to try N110 but I can't find any locally. If the Blue Dot does ok, I will not worry about the N110. The AA5744 I can find at alot of places. In my searching, the powders I have seen are AA5744, N110, Blue Dot. Is there any other good powders for "light loads/low recoil loads"?

I found the Blue Dot to do well with the 17 gr to 18.5 gr from my NEF converted 45-70. I have the VV110 that shoots well with 30 gr, & the 4759 using 31 gr. I use HB sabot 45/40 also w/wad or Veggie wad over powder load. Bullets are XTP's, SST's n SW's

Years ago, 45 cal inline MLers came out (Knight, CVA) and advertised 2600’/sec. 150g T7 and Pyrodex. The bullet -155g XTP. 200 yds advertised. Within a year, the 45 cal was deemed too light and its demise began. Soon, no 45s anywhere. Why, low energy at range with the poor BC’d , light XTPs. There are much better choices available today. Be willing to pay a little more and look at the various companies offerings. Include Parker, Barnes, CEB, Pittman, Hornady, even Precision non-jacketed bullets, etc.. I’d try for a lot more BC and a little more weight, depending. Blue Dot works well. VV110 is my favorite.

The 200SST in a Harvester sabot is a proven combination. VV110 33-37 or 38gs will offer nearly 2600’/sec with low recoil, excellent accuracy, virtually no temp sensitivity. FWIW, I always lightly knurl the bullet and put either a vege wad or wool wad between the powder and the sabot. Even a 180 XTP is a bit light considering the BC. A 200g XTP can be good for initially shooting before moving on to the 200 SST.

I was messing around with the 700ML. I had some samples of .410 41 mag bullets. I tried them in the HLB and the ribbed HLB sabots. They fit pretty good. Once I started them with a short starter, I didn't have to "bust a vein in my forehead" trying to load them. Just a good 2 hand pressure. The sabot looked fine. It wasn't tore or stretched at all. The sabot was engraved pretty good.

Now I just use the Hornady 200 X 40 SST and XTP depending on gun and where hunting. For longer ranges and hotter loading I use Fury and Pittman 40 cal X 225 grainers etc... My opinion and experience, others will differ. 10

Has anyone used the Barnes .451xpb 250gr (with the large hollow point) with blue dot. I have been wondering about the best load to use in my scout conversion for my son to shoot. It shoots 40 xtps good but I thought the xpb might be better for hunting just haven’t tested for accuracy yet. Has anyone done a hair test with this bullet? Also have 40 cal sst and Barnes 195.

25 grains IMR 4759 Hornady .452” 250XTP. Set my nine year old neighbor boy up last year with this load. Replicates a trap door .45/70 load. He killed his first deer with it at smidge over 100 yards. Very little recoil pleasure to shoot. Vhitavouri N110 would do the same I’m sure
