I think you will be happier in the end with bushings or bearings to reduce wear as has been suggested. It looks like you have a good start on your project.

I still would like to start with the original approach to see what develops and then look at adding flanged bearing sleeves as a winter project. Also would then need a bullet location placement screw. Again no real problem to do. What I have also enjoyed is seeing and experiencing group support of sharing and working together to reach a goal. Just like the old days. Ed

Just a suggestion: Rather than bending the crank handle, thread the end, install a nut and drive it with a variable speed drill. Made my life easier.

Thank you my friend for this great suggestion making this a better project. I'm going to keep the original crank handle and make another shaft extension (easy to do). Also make a socket adaptable to attach to the drill for easy slip on and off while operating the knurling tool for another bullet placement. Knurling just got easier. Ed

Almost there as a package arrived today. The crucial part is yet to come with welding the other knurling wheel to a shaft. Three criteria's need to be met. Preheat, controlled welding and lengthen rate of weld cooling in order for this to work properly. Also need to wait for the boys to finish with their strike. Well back to the waiting game, chuckle.

Another thing to consider:
The knurling wheel will make bullets "walk" one way or another. In your photo, if the top of the wheel is turning toward you, the bullet will tend to walk to the right. If the top is turning away, it will tend to walk to the left.
My contraption has three wheels. The driver wheel has a vertical cut, and the knurlers are opposed in direction to each other.
Hope this makes sense.

I'm just using 2-wheels, a LH and RH and my line of thought was that they would produce opposite reactions to travel and cancel each other out. If not then I have a contingency plan for incorporating bullet travel stops that will be mounted on the lower shaft. Just hope I don't have too, chuckle. Ed

After further consideration to dannoboone comments of bullet walking from his experience and having time on my hands I decided to add a bullet stop. Got up early this morning and went to town building the stop. Again Thanks dannoboone for sharing your experience and contributing advise for this build. Ed

Getting close to a trial basis it appears. So close is right. Just need to get the knurling wheel welded to the crankshaft assembly and it's away to the races, chuckle. Hope the boys on strike settle soon and then it's game time. Ed
