Ok I’ve searched the threads but can’t find what I’m looking for so I’m sorry if this has been asked a thousand times before. Okay so first off I’m shooting a savage 10ml-II with a .45 cal 25” small shank brux barrel from Luke.. My current load is 70gr of H4198 behind a smooth formed 275gr MH, and a win 209. My average speed is 2760 with that load but I want more speed my goal is 3000fps with this gun, so what powders can I use to get there or is the length of my barrel holding me back. I’m sure some of you will ask why do you want that speed and my answer is why not? Thanks

That load is already pretty hot for a small shank Savage. IMR3031 can possibly get you more speed.

That load is already hotter than I would recommend. You've got the wrong gun for going 3K. If you want to go 3K, you need a 28" #17 contour build.

There are other ways to flatten trajectory than just speed. With slow burning powder and a 325gr AeroMax can reach 2700 fps at under 40,000psi.

In a 209 gun, the peak pressure the 209 sees isn't always equivalent to the peak pressure in the barrel. The flame channel acts as an expansion chamber. So a slower powder with a longer dwell at max pressure is going to stress primer more. This is why you definitely can't use the primer in a 209 gun as a pressure indicator. This is also a good example of why it can be dangerous to recommend load advice for a gun unless you've actually tested that load in same type of setup.

Thank you very much for the clarification Luke. I personally would have had sit that load myself. Now looking at dwell time I can understand how that can change things. Thanks for the education.
