I finally had a chance to shoot my 2nd 45-70 conversion to a 45 cal. smokeless muzzleloader. BeStill, thank you, you do awesome work! I had Bestill recrown the barrel The old crown was hideous I think my scope went bad. 100 yds, 3 shot group, 250 gr Barnes 250 gr TEZ with a heavy knurl, 6 gr N110 duplex with 50 gr IMR4198, Veggie wad, Fed. LRMP in a brass module. The 2nd group, 3 shots, same charge except with a wool wad 3rd group, same powder charge, veggie wad with a 285 gr BCB bullet, I think 2 and 3 are the same hole, if not, then the shot went WAY off! I think the scope is not holding zero. When I shot it as a 45-70, I noticed the same thing but wasn't sure if it was my handloads or something else. I pulled the scope off tonight and put another one on. Hopefully, next week I'll get a chance to shoot it again. If it's not the scope, it could be forearm pressure, the shooter's holding pressure, loading pressure, load work, the scope base, a rotten trigger puller, or, or...

2-3 are touching in all groups possibly cold bore shot just having a different poi ? Be interesting to see a five shot group to see if 2-5 stacked in together ... if so I’d say your cold bore shot is just a different poi

Looks pretty sweet try shooting it once an hour maybe six or seven times with the exact same conditions every shot so you have six or seven first shots.

Newbie here, and i have a question for the poster. I just found and am in the process of buying your exact same gun which I'm planning on converting to SML. Why the duplex load of two powders? I see most folks just using 4198 by itself. Are their advantages to a duplex load or are you having ignition problems with just using 4198?

I spect the duplex load was to kick the copper bullet up to fatten it up quickly for its bore ride to the target.

The duplex load is a carry over from my 209 primer muzzleloaders, I shoot duplex loads in those for cold weather ignition and for the pressure to rise quicker so my all copper hunting bullets engrave the rifling as quick as possible. The first load I tried in Apex #1 shot so well, I didn't try anything different. It is on my list to try a straight charge of IMR4198 but I haven't got around to it yet. Update, I don't think my scope went bad. I still get a flyer and here is one on shot 5. I'm going to switch forearms with Apex 1 and see if that may be it.

Back off of the powder a little and see if the flyer goes away, if not go up just a little

Anyone know where to get the 250 TEZ in bulk? Wakeman had them advertised @ 75 to a box, but his "shop" is closed.

I believe barnes stopped selling the muzzloader bullets in bulk a fews back. Yeah it’s been several years now. The price I have on the 24 packs with sabots is basically same price per bullet as the value packs were.
